In the 1920s and 1930s Peter Cheyney wrote hundreds of short stories for the then thriving magazine and newspaper market. A particularly popular series was the "Alonzo MacTavish" saga, MacTavish being a cross between Raffles and Simon Templar; a master burglar and knight errant.
