Free again from the author via KDP Select @ Amazon:

The Box & Other Odd Stories by Steven Torres (SYKM), a collection of mostly mystery/thriller shorts with some sf/fantasy pieces.

13 Stories, 60,000 words, Countless Oddities...

In Perfecta, the citizens have been genetically modified to help them become their best selves, but that doesn't mean there can't be a little murder.

In Well Worn, the twisted but true story of Cinderella and her prince finally comes to light.

The Price of being Billy's friend is quite high, and can only be paid in blood, but whose?

Desert People is about a photographer on assignment in an arid land and the people he winds up buying.

Taking Van Der Flieder's Star is an old-fashioned tale of greed, meteorites, and catching the last ferry.
(the rest of the story summaries can be found in the full blurb)

Free again from the author via KDP Select @ Amazon:

A Warrior's Code by Larry Johns, a mercenary action adventure thriller originally out from UK publisher Robert Hale in 2011. If you picked up the self-pub sequel that was freebied previously upthread but missed the original, well, now you've got the entire set.

Treachery and double-cross are the hallmarks of the mercenary soldier. Because, who is the real enemy? Is he the man in your cross-hairs, or the friend alongside you? Or is it the man who pays your wages? Martin Palmer knows that a potentially fatal bullet might come from any direction. And yet he must fight, because fighting is all he knows. This deadly challenge will test him to the limits of his endurance. He knows there will always be another paymaster with high aspirations, and enough money to pursue them...and money, of course, is the mercenary soldier's creed.

Some other Larry Johns books were offered in January for free. I was only missing 3 of them and the other two only cost me $5.00 (total) so I was able to finish out the set. Thanks.

Don't Dare a Dame by M. Ruth Meyers (book 3 in the Maggie Sullivan hard boiled/cozy series) is 99 cents!!! I've read the first two and they were great fun.

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00GJQEGO0/...I1GNS7XEYDPWW5

One of them won the Shamus or was nominated or something.

I reviewed the first book on my blog. -- I am not sure if I mentioned for those who are extremely picky-- There's some wonky formatting here and there with paragraph indents and a missing word or two in both of the first two books. The first mystery had a better denouement than the second IMO, but the second was good too!

Haven't read the third, but picked it up for that price. It's on sale on Kobo too.

Blackstone and the Great Game, previously published as Blackstone and the Tiger, is a (repeat) US Kindle Countdown deal. It's the second in the Blackstone series by Sally Spencer. It is $0.99 for about 3 3/4 more days before going up to $3.99. According to the SYKM website, Sally Spencer is a pen name for Alan Rustage, who wrote several mystery series under that pen name, and also the Inspector Paco Ruiz series using the pen name of James García Woods.

link: http://www.amazon.com/Blackstone-Gre...dp/B00N30N0T2/
Spoiler:
Quote:
A series of kidnappings seemed like straightforward, run-of-the-mill crimes at first, but Inspector Sam Blackstone soon realizes they are anything but.

This gang is so ruthless that it shocks even the hardened London criminal underworld — so efficient and meticulous in its planning that it evades all the traps the police set for it with almost contemptuous ease.

And it is plain to Blackstone that this is just a preliminary skirmish — that the gang ultimately intends to play for much larger stakes.

But Blackstone's problems are only just beginning.

When the son of the visiting Maharajah of Chandrapore - known to all as the Tiger - is taken in a full-on ambush, Blackstone realises that the previous kidnappings were just practice for a plot that impacts not only Britain, but it’s whole Empire.

Blackstone finds himself caught up in a game of cat and mouse, frantically trying to pin down the loose threads to find the lost prince before it’s too late.

But with the criminals always appearing to be one step ahead of the Inspector, he begins to suspect that the threat is closer to home than he previously thought…

Praise for Sally Spencer:

“Spencer's finest hour: a tightly plotted puzzler with surprises at every turn” Kirkus Reviews

“Spencer is an accomplished craftsman who serves up a good puzzle and deftly solves it with intelligence and insight” Publishers Weekly

“Characters are diverse, intriguing, and believable . . . plots never fail to surprise; and the procedural details are grittily realistic” Kirkus Reviews

Sally Spencer worked as a teacher both in England and Iran - where she witnessed the fall of the Shah. She now writes full time.

Cappuccino at the Crypt, the first in the St. Polycarp series by Marianna Heusler, is a repeat US Kindle Countdown deal, at $0.99 for about 1 1/2 more days, before going up to $2.99.

link: http://www.amazon.com/Cappuccino-Cry...dp/B00MH5LNAC/
Spoiler:
Quote:
Father Felix, Head master and parish priest at St. Polycarp Church and school is on his way to Palermo, Sicily with a wild bunch of teenage girls from St. Hilda's school. He is sharing chaperone duties with Amelia Johnston and Julia Hopwood, both teachers at St. Polycarp and incorrigible amateur detectives, or snoopy busy-bodies in father Felix's mind, who credit themselves with solving the recent murder of Ms. Pinkerton at St. Polycarp School. Ms. Johnston and Ms. Hopwood think their trip is just an exciting week away during the long summer break and the pay is good, but Father Felix is on a mission and it could be dangerous. A confession of a terrible secret haunts him. He cannot break the confessional bond but volunteered for the trip to Sicily with his teachers to try to right a wrong. The secret is buried in the famous crypts in Palermo where the gruesome displays of dead bodies and dead priests are not for the faint-hearted. Father Felix only hopes that he doesn't end up in the collection and Ms. Johnston and Ms. Hopwood only hope they don't end up spending more time with the loutish girls from St. Hilda's.

Hot in December is a novella by Joe R. Lansdale, at $0.99 on US Kindle Countdown for about 2 3/4 more days before going up to $5.99 (quite a stiff normal price for a novella, IMO).

link: http://www.amazon.com/Hot-December-J...dp/B00H2KBT7E/
Spoiler:
Quote:
A psychological thriller in the vein of Dean Koontz and Lee Child, Hot in December is a fast-paced and entertaining novella from the author of Edge of Dark Water, The Bottoms and the Hap and Leonard novel series.

One death is only the beginning for Tom and his wife Kelly who witness a fast-driving car killing their innocent neighbor in the street.

Tom describes the driver to the police, but there is something he didn't anticipate: the driver belongs to a powerful criminal gang in East Texas.

The criminals make Tom and his family a target, abducting his wife Kelly and threatening his daughter. Now Tom must look to old war comrades for help in a brutal and unforgiving struggle to rescue his wife and bring justice to the notorious gang.

A storyteller in the great American tradition of Ambrose Bierce and Mark Twain." - Boston Globe

"Joe R. Lansdale has a folklorist's eye for telling detail and a front-porch raconteur's sense of pace." - The New York Times Book Review

"One of the greatest yarn spinners of his generation: fearless, earthy, original, manic and dreadfully funny." - Dallas Morning News

"Reading Joe Lansdale is like listening to a favorite uncle who just happens to be a fabulous storyteller." - Dean Koontz

"Joe R. Lansdale's fellow Texans would call Joe a 'straight shooter.' That's what makes his writing so good-no BS involved. Joe's work is alternately scary, funny as hell, disturbing, but always (and most importantly) memorable." - Bruce Campbell

A whole bunch of books by Ben Rehder (finalist for a bunch of awards for his first novel in the Blanco County series, Buck Fever) are on US Kindle Countdown at $0.99 for about one more day before going up to $5.99. I don't have time to do all the blurbs, but here are the links:

Blanco County series

#1, Buck Fever: http://www.amazon.com/Buck-Fever-Bla...dp/B005MAA8LY/

#2, Bone Dry: http://www.amazon.com/Bone-Blanco-Co...dp/B005JPOL2Y/

#3, Flat Crazy: http://www.amazon.com/Flat-Crazy-Bla...dp/B005JKEPQ6/

#4, Guilt Trip: http://www.amazon.com/Guilt-Trip-Bla...dp/B005UZGH7U/

#6, Holy Moly: http://www.amazon.com/Holy-Moly-Blan...dp/B00CENWPE0/

#7, Hog Heaven: http://www.amazon.com/Heaven-Blanco-...dp/B00DIMYVL6/

#8, Stag Party: http://www.amazon.com/Stag-Party-Bla...dp/B00QMTNYNS/

Not quite sure why the fifth in the series, Gun Shy, is still at full price - it still lists Minotaur as the publisher, so maybe the rights are messed up, or maybe just an oversight, but in any case, this is a chance to get almost the whole series for a good price.

Roy Ballard mysteries

#1, Gone the Next: http://www.amazon.com/Gone-Next-Ball...dp/B009GPICOQ/

#2, Get Busy Dying: http://www.amazon.com/Busy-Dying-Bal...dp/B00IPSMXYK/

Bright Lights, Big City: A Ryan Kyd Thriller by Roger Hurn

Private Investigator Ryan Kyd finds himself alone in London on New Year's Eve when he receives a phone call from Jason Mulwhinney, a successful playwright, with a case for him to investigate.
Mulwhinney wants Kyd to go to New York to retrieve the stolen manuscript for a play he has written, which he believes has been taken by Jezebel, his ex-girlfriend.
But when Kyd hunts Jezebel down, she claims the manuscript was actually written by her.

Roger Hurn has had over 70 books published. In his spare time Roger plays seven-a-side football and, to the horror of music lovers everywhere, guitar in a rock band.

Free from the author via KDP Select @ Amazon:

Cry Baby by Fay Cunningham, 2nd in her Gina Crosse series mystery/thriller series starring the eponymous forensic artist, originally out from UK publisher Robert Hale in 2010.

Gina Cross is a forensic artist. She puts the flesh back on the bones of the dead. She is concerned by the death of a teenager who recently gave birth, but who is the girl and where is her baby? Then another pregnant young woman goes missing.

The clues lead to an upmarket fertility clinic and Gina’s worst fears are confirmed – something terrible is happening in the clinic’s back rooms. With time running out to find the missing girl, Gina enlists the help of investigative journalist Adam Shaw. They will have to expose the clinic’s deadly secret before more innocent lives are taken.

Free again from the author via KDP Select @ Amazon:

Blood of the Lamb by Michael Lister (SYKM), 2nd in his John Jordan Mystery series starring the eponymous Florida prison chaplain, originally out from Bleak House Books in 2004. We've previously received others in the series free in recent months.

Florida prison chaplain John Jordan’s search for the peace that has so long eluded him is interrupted by an unimaginable murder. Attempting to be a good man in a very bad place while also maintaining his shaky sobriety, John investigates the murder of the seven year-old adopted daughter of ex-con turned televangelist, Bobby Earl Caldwell, a murder committed in John’s own locked office when Bobby Earl conducts a service in the Potter Correctional Institution chapel.

This unspeakable act, and the investigation that follows, will force John to confront his own fears and beliefs, causing this man of mercy to thirst for justice. Torn between the seemingly conflicting roles he’s asked to assume—cop and cleric—John must struggle to figure out his identity as well as that of the killer’s, but his past continues to haunt him in the form of troubling thoughts of failure and the resurfacing of his ex-wife, Susan.

Putting aside his distrust of the slick televangelist and his seductive wife, John must ignore intimidation and resist manipulation to find a killer among some very unusual suspects—including two murderers, a child molester, a teacher with something to hide, and Bobby Earl Caldwell himself whose very act of exposing his daughter to such risk causes John to suspect him from the very beginning.

Amid private crises and the torturous experiences of a thoughtful, sensitive man working in such a pitiless place, nothing short of death will end John’s search for the person who killed little Nicole Caldwell. Uncovering the guilt, restoring the balance, John seeks pardon from the self-inflicted life sentence he’s serving and exoneration from the burden of regret he bears.

ETA: X-link to the General/Literary Fiction megathread:

Free from the author via KDP Select @ Amazon: The Selby Printout by Ruth Benjamin, a Jewish techno-thriller originally out from Jerusalem-based Targum Press in 1998. Benjamin also offers some thriller-y looking hidden-secrets-of-the-past self-discovery backlist novels with Jewish themes as well, if you're interested.
