Quiet as They Come, by Angie Chau, is a free short story, excerpted from the collection of the same name. I don't know whether this is a regular attention-getting extract promo, or meant to publicize Amazon's new Singles division, but here it is, free for Canadians and presumably others in the Kindle store.

Quiet As They Come is a beautiful and at times brutal portrait of a people caught between two cultures. Set in San Francisco from the 1980s to the present day, this debut collection explores the lives of several families of Vietnamese immigrants as they struggle to adjust to life in their new country, often haunted by the memories and customs of their old lives in Vietnam. While some are able to survive and assimilate, others are crushed by the promise of the "American Dream." No matter their fate, you will never be able to forget the people you meet in this remarkable collection.

Install the Kindle app from the app store onto your iPad/iPod and use that to get the book. My wife has it setup on her iPod and reads books on it and/or the iBooks app.

Assuming you bought it earlier, as it is no longer for sale at the above ASIN.

Freebies are short lived - don't expect them to last more than a day to a week, usually.
