I guess, since the book is so short anyway, it can be hard to say much about it without giving something away.

I'm just confused that they felt they needed to summarize the book in the introduction. Tell us about the author and about the impact the book has had, but don't summarize it.

No reason to be confused - that's what the introduction in a "classic" does. It's an essay about the book written by somebody knowledgeable on the subject. Completely normal.

And the reason I recommend reading scholarly introduction essays after the book for those who wish not to be spoiled or wish to have material to judge the essay with.

If you haven't read the book before then yes, I completely agree with you.

With such a short introduction (2-3 pages?) I wasn't expecting a scholarly work, so the size really got me on this one.

I have a Scribner published version with a simple picture of the ocean on the cover. The introduction is only a couple pages long but they felt they had to summarize a bit too much. Just because a book is a classic it doesn't mean that everyone has read it.
Penguin does this with it's classics. It gives out way too much about the book in the intro and thus, the intro should not be read first. It should be read last.

I don't get why they do this. It just spoils the book as you end up knowing too much of the story before you start to read it.
