Once HBO airs its version of 'The End', I suspect the novel will follow shortly after.

It’ll never be finished. He’ll just let the tv show finish it for him.

By now I expect a mediocre book, when it is finally released. I don't think he knows where to take the story, and the extreme pressure on him, likely creates some situations where he just picks the easiest path in front of him.
Personally I can wait. I enjoyed the currently released books, and look forward to reading them again, along with the last 2+ books. But I won't start re-reading them, until all the books are released, and I honestly don't think he'll live through to finish them at this point, given his current speed, and the fact that he hasn't even started writing on Dreams of Spring. |

I gave up a long time ago. Books 1, 2, and 3 were great. 4, not so great, 5 I stopped about 1/2 way through.
I wouldn't read Winds of Winter if you gave it to me for free. I don't believe it will be worth the effort. |

Maybe if he quit working on other projects he would get it finished. It seems like every time I turn around there is some new anthology or something with his name on it.

Maybe he should form a support group with Jim Butcher.

I think Neil Gaiman said it pretty well in his blog post Entitlement issues:

That's fine I know that. I just think if they are on hiatus, hitting a dry spell or chasing a love interest they should say so. That I understand, not the, "I will have the book out in six months", every six months for two or three years.

Ahhh ... I wondered when the ol' Gaiman defense would be trotted out.
Martin brings on the criticism himself, by being so public about his appearances and hobbies, and side-projects (and passion for the Jets, and figurine painting... yada, yada). Fans (most fans anyway) would be happy to wait for his books if he wasn't in everyone's face with all the look-at-me-not-working-on-the-stuff-you-really-care-about-(and that made me what I am today) aspects of his life. Martin doesn't care about finishing this series. That's why he's letting HBO do it for him. He just needs to admit it and move on. |
