Children of Time $2.99 ebook deal

Adrian Tchaikovsky's Children of TIme is $2.99 at Kobo, Amazon, and probably B&N 'for a limited time'. I've had this on my wishlist for a while and this is the first discount I've seen for it.

Discover frightening—and sometimes hilarious—visions of the future in this science fiction anthology featuring 12 short stories by Nebula and Hugo Award winners!

New and established voices in science fiction offer original stories of the future. Tales from Who Fears Death’s Nnedi Okorafor, The Three-Body Problem’s Cixin Liu, and others reveal metal-melting viruses, vegetable-based heart transplants, search-and-rescue drones, and semi-automated sailing ships. Inside you’ll also find:

• Ken Liu writes about a virtual currency that hijacks our empathy.
• Elizabeth Bear shows us a smart home tricked into kidnapping its owner.
• Clifford V. Johnson writes of a computer scientist seeing a new side of the artificial intelligence she invented.
• J. M. Ledgard describes a 28,000-year-old AI who meditates on the nature of loneliness.

Contributors
Elizabeth Bear, SL Huang, Clifford V. Johnson, J. M. Ledgard, Cixin Liu, Ken Liu, Paul McAuley, Nnedi Okorafor, Malka Older, Sarah Pinsker, Alastair Reynolds

And I now note that on its Kindle and Kobo webpages, Witch King is now said to be "The Rising World Book 1". Which kind of implies there may be a Book 2 someday, although I don't see it listed at either Kindle or Kobo US. So maybe I'll get my wish for a sequel...

Witch King has such a weird structure, and plot progression. I didn't think it was great, but I appreciated it doing something different.

The Butcher of the Forest by Premee Mohamed is $2 in the North America (Kobo US, Amazon.com)
Novella. Was on my wishlist.
Quote:
A world-weary woman races against the clock to survive a deadly forest in this dark, otherworldly fairytale.

At the northern edge of a land ruled by a merciless foreign tyrant lies a wild, forbidden forest ruled by powerful magic.

Veris Thorn—the only one to ever enter the forest and survive—is forced to go back inside to retrieve the tyrant's missing children. Inside await traps and trickery, ancient monsters, and hauntings of the past.

One day is all Veris is afforded. One misstep will cost everything.

Got it (£0.99 on the Kobo UK site)! Thank you. I like all of the authors represented so a good collection for me.

This is the 2018 anthology of Twelve Tomorrows. There's a new one almost every year.
Note that some of the stories have appeared in later author collections.

The Budayeen Cycle is again on sale, this time below $5, as predicted:

https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/the-budayeen-cycle
https://www.amazon.com/Budayeen-Cycl...dp/B0741QZVZ7/

I've finished the first since posting the deal a couple months back, and am about halfway through the second title. Whether you've paid $4 or $5 for it, I'd say it's worth it.

For those who have Kobo Plus, this title is included.

I had read the first book years back and worth it to check out the rest of the series.

Yeah, that's why I had to try really hard to get into it. If I hadn't had a review copy, and "owed" the review, I might even have given up. Or if I hadn't liked the Murderbot books so much, so was willing to persist a bit more than if I hadn't had experience with Wells. But once I figured it out, mostly about the structure/two timelines, and how to know which one I was in, I really really liked it. And I loved the finely-tuned snark, and the found family.

Chess with a Dragon by David Gerrold is $2 in the US (Kobo, Amazon)
This is a new Open Road Media edition.
Quote:
The human race has been played for a fool. Though welcomed into the galactic community and given access to the combined knowledge of thousands of intelligent species, humans are largely regarded as an evolutionary mistake. Reptilian, insectoid, and other unclassifiable species are the dominant forms of intelligence. If it hadn’t been for that annoying comet, the dinosaurs would have continued their evolutionary journey to sentience. Instead the ridiculous mammalians survived. And they want to be treated as equals.

Now the humans find out that the Galactic Encyclopedia has a user fee—and they are overdrawn! If the debt can’t be paid, humanity will be sold as slaves . . . or food. Asst. Liaison Officer Yake Singh Browne feels personally betrayed. He comes up with a strategy: If humanity can’t win playing by the rules of the game, he’ll just have to change the rules.

Game on!
