That depends how you define "success". Is it something that's going to grab a sizeable chunk of the tablet market? No, of course not. Are there enough people who want to buy one to allow a small company to make a healthy profit? I think there probably are. Time will tell.

Plastic Logic was coming up with a completely new technology, whereas the reMarkable uses existing (but very recent) parts. The time to market of the products is years different between the two.

What remarkable is aiming for is no better than what Plasticlogic had with Que 8 years ago. It didn't make much sense back then, it makes even less sense now. It's DOA.

PlasticLogic was aiming for flexible electronic circuits using plastic technology. A completely new fabrication process. The large ereader was just a way of bootstrapping the production system. Again, you can't compare the two companies. PlasticLogic didn't fail because it was offering a large ereader, it failed because it couldn't deliver on the flexible circuits in time.

Why doesn't it make sense? I can think of plenty of professions and hobbies where a ReMarkable would be incredibly useful.

The CEO decided to kill the product because by the time they had everything ready, the market had dramatically changed for eInk devices. Now that it's 10 years later, this is the right time for a 10 inch reader? I think not. I own dozens of eInk devices with my absolute favorite being the Entourage Edge. Most of their customers loved the product and had loyal followers, myself included. It would be pretty tough for reMarkable to duplicate their level of success. RIP Entourage Edge. RIP reMarkable.

Sonict, how do you define "success" for a specialist product produced by a small company?

In this case, longevity and number of products produced.

Really? Because you've already written off reMarkable before their first product has hit the shelves. You haven't given them any time to see if they will be around for a while or produce other models.

I have no ill feelings toward the company. I hope they prove me wrong.

Apparently it makes sense to 30,000 people who forked out a lot of money on a product no one apart from few journos has seen and that is made by a company that came out of nowhere. Quite the opposite to what you say, this product lives before it has even arrived.

Whether it delivers that's another question. Not long before we find out though...

reMarkable website says the pre-order ($479 including pen and folio case) will end in 5 days.

Cheers.
