Embedded fonts

Hi,
Cleaning up a book that has 598 embedded fonts.
Have done it but why would somebody embed so may fonts (graphic fonts included - wingdings)?

Stupid word use.
BUT
Are the fonts really embedded or is that just another poorly crafted (using word) that includes @font... in every file?

The real font (.ttf,.otf file) will be in the fonts folder of a calibre conversion.
I call all this unnecessary junk (to really make the book look as intended on a e-reader): Word cruft

FWIW I have developed a whole pile of saved searches over the years (mine are mostly in Sigil) to help do the cleanup. (I also beautify files FIRST, so the code is more standardized. every line in the CSS ends with a ; )

Code:
@font-face {
    font-family: .+;
    panose-1: .+?\s+}
As with ALL cleanup routines: LOOK FIRST (at the code) as some font stuff is desired for that books look and a wholesale Nuke'm would be bad
The above could be for a pretty-decorative title that you want

Because they know zero about graphic design, or typography, or ebook creation or publishing? Or nearly nothing about all of those.

Perhaps they were following the ransom note method of font choices.

Thanks for the info.
The manage fonts dialogue has fonts ticked as embedded.
The header for each file does have created by word and every font is listed under <style> in each file.
Just a nuisance to get rid of them.
Thanks theducks for the tip on beautify first.

Where is the personal dictionary?

Good morning,
under Windows 10, could someone tell me where, and the name, is the file of the personal dictionary, the one that contains the words that we added so as not to lose it again during a reinstallation of Windows.
THANKS.

Not the correct thread to ask your question, but in answer it seems to be in...

C:\Users\<YourUsername>\AppData\Roaming\calibre\di ctionaries

and the words you added are contained in the prefs.json file.

Sorry, I went to the wrong place to post my request and can't see how to delete it.

You are welcome.

Just remember to use a code editor if you intend to edit it (which you really shouldn't).
Something like Notepad++ or Visual Studio Code.

Question Add-On Question

I have roughly the opposite question. On my current ePub formatting job, I needed "checkboxes" on a set of pages. (I am using Calibre.)I duly incorporated Wingding.ttf in the Fonts, including checking that it was duly added to the content.opf. The default reader for Calibre reads everything wonderfully, as does Adobe's Acrobat Reader. However, when I tried the Nook reader, the checkboxes do NOT show, only an indication of an unrecognized character. Any ideas what I missed or how to fix this?

I appreciate any help or insights anyone may have. Thank you.

Is the checkbox character included in the wingding font file? I don't have that fontfile handy to check.

Nooks are noted for being fussy (limited more than some).
Also, is there a way to set the device to use Publishes styles (but this might be an issue if you are shipping the book).

Look in the Symbol font
BTW can you legally embed Wingding?

As long as you obtain the Electronic Doc license and pay for the appropriate number of copies, the answer would be yes.

It's not enough to add the font to the .opf file, you also need to add it to a style. The epub might have looked OK in ADE and Calibre Viewer, because the font was installed on your machine.

The OP could also simply embed Noto Sans Symbols 2, which comes with checkboxes.
