"Flesh & Bones," the last of the Lassiters, Hits Kindle Top 10 Hardboiled List

I was sitting at the end of the bar sipping single-malt Scotch when I spotted the tall blond woman with the large green eyes and the small gray gun.

That's the opening line of "Flesh and Bones," the last -- and in most critics' opinions, the best -- of the Jake Lassiter thrillers.

It's now a $2.99 e-book on Kindle and Nook.

"Flesh & Bones" hit number 8 yesterday on the Kindle Hardboiled Mystery Bestseller List, right under one of my favorite novels, "The Friends of Eddie Coyle," by George V. Higgins.

But back to the story. The next thing Jake Lassiter knows, the woman pumps three bullets into the man on the next barstool. And Jake, the linebacker-turned-lawyer, has a new client.

She’s stunning model Chrissy Bernhardt, and the dead man is her wealthy father. Is Chrissy the anguished victim of childhood sexual abuse or a cold-blooded killer?

Complicating the situation, Jake falls for his client, clouding his judgment. Jake wades into a quagmire of dirty water deals, big money, and family corruption, all leading to an explosive finale.

WHAT’S THE VERDICT ON “FLESH & BONES?”

“Lassiter is coming on fast as one of the most entertaining series characters in contemporary crime fiction.” – Booklist

“Levine’s prose gets leaner, meaner, better with every book...And Jake Lassiter has a lot more charisma than Perry Mason ever did.” – The Miami Herald

“Another enjoyable, breathless thriller.”– South Florida Sun-Sentinel

“Enough courtroom shenanigans to please even the most stalwart John Grisham fan.” – Lansing (MI) State Journal

“The author keeps the suspense high with innovative twists...and touches of humor that spice up the courtroom scenes.” – The Chicago Tribune

"The genuine article...the most dangerous detective liaison since Sam Spade and Brigid O’Shaughnessy tangoed in ‘The Maltese Falcon.’”– Charlotte News & Observer

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

The author of 14 novels, Paul Levine won the John D. MacDonald fiction award and was nominated for the Edgar, Macavity, International Thriller, and James Thurber prizes. A former trial lawyer, he also wrote more than 20 episodes of the CBS military drama “JAG.” He is also the author of the “Solomon vs. Lord” series and the thriller “Illegal.” His next book will be “Lassiter,” due in Fall 2011 from Bantam.
