Kenzaburo Oe has died at age 88

Regarded by some in Japan as distinctly western, Oe’s style was often likened to William Faulkner; in his own words, in his writing he would “start from my personal matters and then link it up with society, the state and the world”.
Oe's fiction has never been an easy read, but I've always felt better for having read it.

Truly sad news. I've enjoyed some of his fiction though it definitely required concentration.
