Why flash?
What is the purpose of the flashing when digital readers change screen display? it happens on all the readers I have seen either in person or on YouTube.

the flash on e-ink screens is to set the display back to zero, so to speak, and reduce "ghosting" of previous pages showing under the new page.

It erases the screen so when the screen is drawn, there isn't ghosting.

It's sort of like turning over your etch-a-sketch and shaking. The eink screen just does it really fast.

In the Cybook you can turn off the flashing, then you see why it is useful

I originally thought you were asking why flash memory is used. :P Anyway, interesting about the screen flash; I was wondering that myself, but a "refresh" makes sense.

It's probably more expensive and less accurate to specifically discharge the particles in the writings so they do a total wipe-out...
