Most of the big publishers grew by acquisition, so "semi-autonomous" is a good description of the imprints. You'd like to think there would be an overall corporate policy and ebook strategy, but it seems not.

Publishers might indeed let a unit like the SF imprint dip corporate toes in the water with ebooks, but may not assume that other imprints would benefit. Depending upon the imprint, the content published, and the perceived market, they may be right.
