The Newgate Calender was originally a series of summaries of the careers of felons imprisoned in the notorious prison, later gathered into various collections. By 1824 a "standardised" text had appeared, and is the basis of this 4-volume edition, which covers the years from earliest times to 1682. A further Calender appeared some years later as the "New Newgate Calender" extending the coverage to 1799. I will upload "The New Newgate Calender" seperately.

The Calender is organised by year, and I have used these year groupings as "chapters". The cover illustration is from an 18th century print.
