The Sabres of Paradise

Written by British travel writer Leslie Blanch, it's the history of a mid-19th century Islamic holy war against Russian imperialism in the Caucasus and was one of the sources for Frank Herbert's Dune. It's available for Kindle Unlimited.

The L.A. Review of Books has a nice article about Dune's debt to it.
