Finally completed The Remains of the Day by Ishiguro. I guess English butlers do not interest me as much has I thought. The book wasn't what I expected either. Lots of reminiscing and side comments like "truth be told," "I believe," "to be honest" etc. Such things bore me. The book's last chapter was it's one bright spot. After 245 pages I still do not know what butlers do beside carry tea into drawing rooms. Grade D+ (2 stars).
Will stop in the library tomorrow to grab my ILLs. Three requests arrived. |

I'd recommend The Warrior's Apprentice by Lois McMaster Bujold. Self-contained, although (the first) part of a series. It's in the Baen Free library, so you can download for free in DRM-free Kindle/Mobipocket or ePub formats. |

Just finished The Kinshield Legacy by K.C. May. Great fantasy. Now starting The Black God's War by Moses Siregar III. I've been looking forward to this ever since I read the novella some months back.

Maelstorm by Peter Watts.
Recently discovered the author. I am now on book 2 of his Rifters series. He's a marine biologist and mixes that field very nicely with sci-fi, I find. |

On the home stretch for Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett (paper read before bed) and just started H.G. Wells' Tono-Bungay (Gutenberg download for on the go). Hope it improves or Mr. Wells will only be batting 3 out of 4 titles for me.

Love Patricia Briggs--Her Mercy Thompson and Alpha and Omega series; her stand alones, her early work, probably anything she jots down on a napkin too!

Currently reading The Night Circus
Erin Morgenstern’s dark, enchanting debut takes us to the black and white tents of Le Cirque des Reves, a circus that arrives without warning, simply appearing when yesterday it was not there. Young Celia and Marco have been cast into a rivalry at The Night Circus, one arranged long ago by powers they do not fully understand. Over time, their lives become more intricately enmeshed in a dance of love, joy, deceit, heartbreak, and magic. Author Morgenstern knows her world inside and out, and she guides the reader with a confident hand. The setting and tone are never less than mesmerizing. The characters are well-realized and memorable. But it is the Night Circus itself that might be the most memorable of all. --Chris Schluep I am only a few chapters into it, not enough to tell if I like it or not yet. |
