They are going to be everywhere before the holiday shopping season starts. The biggest thing is that they are now being sold through Tech Data (an 8 billion dollar IT distributor).

I think that they want the most distribution possible before the other tablets hit the market.

They have nothing to fear from the other tablets, because those manufacturers don't know what they're doing.

Tying thse tablets to a telco with mandated data charges or selling them at unsubsidized phone prices is a recipe for failure.

Apple has already won.

I think Apple wants to ease the load on their retail stores this holiday season--my local store has had barely enough standing room in December for years now.

That is what they said about android based phones as well. While the android isn't an iPhone it has gained market share and is doing well. I am interested to see what HP will bring with the webOS based tablet.

The webOS is a very strong competitor to the iOS, some say it may even be better, however Palm fell way short in their attempt at an App Store.

Huh??? Android phones are sold just like Apple phones. Subsidized, they sell for low prices. Unsubsidized, they sell for high prices. Just like Apple.

That has nothing to do with what I'm talking about. My statement was about tablets, not phones.

Apple sells a contract free, data plan free, tablet for $500. Why can't Android do the same thing?

That may be, but two factors will kill it if not implemented properly. First, they'll need a strong app store; and that will require active support from developers. Second, they'll need to price it lower than WiFi iPads.

Failing either of those will be epic fail.

Unfortunately, Android is a terrible OS for a tablet. I would much prefer some sort of Linux distro, like MEEGO, over Android. Blackberry Playbook looks like a winner too. iPads are awesome though. It will be a tough fight. I just don't see Android tablets coming out on top when everyone who knows the OS knows that it was made strictly for phones and they are just now starting to adapt it to tablets.
