So I will third it.

Not exactly what category(ies) you are speaking of. Science Fiction vs Science to my mind are only related through both including the word science. Science Fiction is very much just fiction, the "science" is more "fantasy" than science, and the first is just telling a fictional tale while the other is educational. I'd say much the same about the Historical Fiction vs History category. How people will vote is another matter. I know that I will vote for Science, but not for Science Fiction.

"[same author]" and "[various authors]" added for clarity, and Hamlet53's vote added to Short Stories.

Short Story Anthologies [various authors] was nominated by din155, WT Sharpe, and HomeInMyShoes.
Short Stories [same author] was nominated by din155, kyteflyer, and Hamlet53.

If all five people are willing, I'll combine those into one category called Short Stories.

din155 - willing
WT Sharpe - willing
HomeInMyShoes - willing
kyteflyer -
Hamlet53 -

In case Hamlet53 doesn't see this soon, it looks like he has already agreed to the combined category.

Also for bookkeeping, kyteflyer seconded Fan Fiction. The second is already noted but no name is listed for the second.

I saw that, but it seemed to have conditions attached. I'll wait to hear from him and kyteflyer. Combining the two without restrictions gives short stories in general a better chance in my opinion.

Nice catch. Now fixed. I don't know how that happened, but as the thread grows and categories get combined, things get confusing.

The Hunger Games is in no way the same or similar to The cat in the Hat.

Please give us some examples of classics that would not fit into any other category that might stand a chance of winning.

I suggest we call it modern fiction as it has a more easy to understand meaning based on the name.

However The Hunger Games (usually considered YA) is comparable to the Harry Potter series (considered both Childrens and YA)

All that matters are the categories that actually make it and an example is easy since the last Classics winner, Cannery Row, wouldn't fit any other category this year.

I have no more votes left, but we have four more categories to fill and I sense we're are running out of ideas, so here are a few for consideration:

• Animals
• Disaster fiction
• Dystopian fiction
• Existentialist fiction
• Feminist Fiction (fiction with a strong female protagonist)
• Film
• Folklore/Legend
• Gay/Lesbian (fiction with a homosexual/bisexual/transgendered protagonist)
History
• Music
• Mythology
• Philosophy
• Poetry
• Stage
• Tragedy
• War
• Western

History is already nominated but here are some other options from last year's shindig:
  • Banned or Challenged Books
  • First in a Series
  • Indie Books
  • Not Classic or Contemporary
  • Pulp Adventure
  • New Releases (published in the last 12 months)
  • MobileRead Author
  • Apocalyptic

The categories I am most interested in are already nominated though, so I don't really want to dilute the field by making more nominations of my own.
