Is a navigational TOC possible using InDesign cs5?

I have a book file made with InDesign Cs5. It includes a hyperlink TOC keyed to text links. Using the FREE converter from Kindle, I managed to create a Kindle book with an internal TOC that works. The tech dudes there checked it out.

But no matter how I try, using the same book file, I cannot get InDesign to produce a TOC for an epub. Without the TOC, the book validates, so it can't be too messed up.

Is there some workaround. If so, please give instructions.

Thanks,

Suzanne

First, you have to create a TOC style in InDesign (Layout > Table of Content Styles), and add the paragraph style where you want the TOC anchors (chapter titles, for example). Then when you export to ePub, choose you TOC style in the Contents tab ('Include InDeisng TOC entries'), and make sure the two next thingy are checked ('Supress Automatic Entries for Documents', and 'Use First Level Entries as Chapter Breaks').

You should then have a navigational TOC.

Good luck.

And for the ePub, get rid of the internal (hyperlinked) ToC. We don't need it and we don't want it.

TBH, I don't use ID TOC as I find it clumsy and sometime inaccurate. I just have a TOC without any hyperlinking and when I'm doing the post processing stuff in Dreamweaver I then insert to hyperlinking at that point. I find this method faster and easier...and if anything goes wrong I can fix it right there and then
