Just going to point these out myself. I'm a fan of H.P. Lovecraft and at $25 for what purports to be a complete collected works was too good to pass up.

All this stuff is free, and really no reason to buy it.

Hodgeson is available for free from MobileRead and numerous other sites.

....all free.

The editions offered through Baen are the texts of the Night Shade Books editions. Some people prefer those editions because the books were well-edited. The SF Site Review calls the paper edition "typo-free." Wow. I don't know if the ebook editions are as well put together, but that seems like a promising start.

Also, from the sample on Baen's site, the illustrations are really nifty:
http://www.webscription.net/chapters...3670.htm?blurb

The Night Shade Hodgson books include a section called "A Note on the Texts." I wanted to read that to know more about their sources, etc. However, it's at the very end, so it's not in the sample chapters.

As far as the CAS stories go, the Night Shade edition again looks like one where the editors went to a lot of trouble to get the texts "right." With stories originally published in magazines or by popular presses, there were often changes made that the authors didn't want. (Even Zane Grey's novels were censored.) The free versions generally use the magazine versions of the stories, but editions like these often restore texts so that readers can get the version the author actually wanted to tell.

I have the complete CAS and Hodgson in the hardcover Night Shade editions. One reason to buy the ebooks is to support the publisher and keep them going.

For short stories, it usually is, actually. Because even a little change can be well, a big change. And people are buying the book because they like the author, not the editor.

And bear in mind the Nightshade stuff did correct spelling and such.

And what's also nice is all the notes on the stories and such (though I'm not sure how well these work in ebook fromat).

Personally, I have all the CAS Nightshade stuff in hardback and it was worth every penny. $25 is a steal for all the ebooks.

Granted, only about half the stories are good (his SF stuff was awful) but they are really good. When he was at his best, he was as good as anyone.

Another plug for the CAS and Hodgson ebooks from Baen. More than well worth the money. My only wish is that the fantasy stories would have been grouped by the world they take place in, but a small quibble at best.

There is also at least one ebook site where the C.A. Smith stories are available for free. I forget where it is at the moment. It was posted here at MR some time back.

Wikisource has a number of short stories as well as The Eldritch Dark website. As they're still not legal in the United States, I won't post a link, but for those with "Life plus 50", they're available.

Myself, I purchased the 6 book series from Baen.

Generally I'd be in favour of a publisher producing a for-cash edition of copyright-free material already available on the internet - if they can show some value add. This probably is such a case - as long as the original source is properly credited with its terms of use properly adhered to, and reimbursed where appropriate. Admittedly, if The Eldritch Dark wasn't already there and already so wonderful, CAS lovers would have even more cause to celebrate. But in this case, I'd be less inclined to debate copyright adherence than crediting the source and terms of use.

But it's not "copyright free". Mr Ashton Smith died in 1961 - his work is still very much protected by copyright everywhere that has a "life+70" copyright law, such as both your country and mine have. Downloading his work, or reading the stories on the internet, is as much copyright infringement as downloading any other pirated work would be.

LOL, Harry, this amuses me. So, even though the Eldritch Dark website has the blessing of the CAS estate for printing the stories on their website, it's still illegal? from the ED site at
http://eldritchdark.com/about

"Permission has been granted for the non-profit use of Clark Ashton Smith material on The Eldritch Dark website by - CASiana (the Estate of Clark Ashton Smith) and Arkham House."

No, obviously if it's been done with the permission of the copyright holder it's fine. But the claim was made in an earlier post that these works were out of copyright, which they are not.

Do the Night Shade ebook editions have working TOCs at the front end of each ebook?

If so, I may have to borrow some money from Harry.
