Robbins, Tod: The Whimpus. v1. 20 Sep 2033

“If you are a militant materialist, with no belief in anything but that which you see with your eyes or touch with your own hands, this story is not for you. But, ‘there are more strange things hidden away in the sea than ever man heard tell of’.”

Sailor Bill Farley captures a whimpus — a mermaid-like fish-woman — believed to store up troves of jewels and golden trinkets. A sea-borne adventure ensues as a group of people sail to Whimpus Island to investigate.

Clarence Aaron Robbins (25 June 1888 – May 10, 1949), billed as C. A. Robbins and better known as Tod Robbins, was an American author of horror and mystery fiction, particularly novels and short story collections. Writing for mainstream pulp magazines, he specialized in horror fiction dealing with themes of madness and cruelty. His work often contains bizarre and frightening plots, sometimes influenced by writers like Oscar Wilde and Robert W. Chambers. His novel The Unholy Three (1917), about side-show performers on a crime spree, was twice adapted for the screen, starring Lon Chaney both times. His short story “Spurs” was the basis for the 1932 cult film Freaks.

“…good pulp fiction, with a note of whimsy and sophistication that is unusual in the form.” —E. F. Bleiler
