Good Works and Other Happy Things
Today is a school holiday for the local public school system. I live near a public high school, and just now when I returned home from an early doctor's appointment I found my whole street, and the street parallel to mine, swarming with high school students. They are working their way along the street raking and bagging leaves in all of the front yards. (Very wet and heavy leaves, because it rained last night.) They are asking for nothing -- just a huge cheerful bunch of kids working together. With all the bad press these days about teenagers, I really wanted to share this. It totally lifted my spirits.

in Girl Scouts, all troops do community service projects every year, and every girl must do a series of individual service projects to get both their Silver and Gold Awards unrelated to the projects for their awards. it is a good way to get to know and get involved with your community!

I sometimes tend to get a bit of the blues, when reading about old folks that get mugged for little money, or other bad things. Perhaps I should light a candle for all mankind. |

We are very lucky. We live in a street that have about five different ethnic groups whose children walk past our house to get to school, or the bus. In the years that we have lived here, we have never had anything nasty happen, and the kids are besotted with my little dog. It's nice and pleasant. Cheers |

I remember very well lots a lots of Subbotnik in my school days. From the age of 7. I loved it for the first couple of years. I was one of the earnest.
We were asked/forced to clean up streets and other places....for free of course. When I was a student and lived in 16 store student hostel in Moscow where uncivilised morons threw rubbish out of windows, every now and then they organised Subbotnik too. One thing I am sure about. It developed my imagination. Devising all possible and impossible reasons why I was absent from this ugly event. Different life style, different mentality, different circumstances. |
