There are very good BBC radio adaptions of the Charles Paris mysteries. I don't know how true they are to the books, but they have Bill Nighy playing Charles Paris. Brilliant.

I have added the books to a watch list. They might drop to £1.00 eventually.... even if that's a decade!

Bill Nighy is a wonderful actor (better, once assumes, than Charles Paris!). AFAIR, BBC radio is not subject to geo-restrictions, so I'll give them a go. They'd be pretty terrific for a bedtime listen.

Some of the BBC Radio online/streaming isn't available in Ireland. But Satellite is. R4 LW works in the car nearly everywhere in Ireland and has been reprieved till next year. Supposed to end yesterday.

I have bought most of these over time at Audible UK, and the collections (3 stories in one) go on sale from time to time. Although I am in the US, Audible UK (surprisingly) allows me to have a UK account. The prices are way more reasonable than Audible US, especially if you get the annual plan. The Audible Plus catalog is great too. I'll be converting to this once my special 99p/month runs out.

Audible Premium Plus
12 Credits
£69.99 per year. Renews automatically.

12 credits upfront, each good for any title in the entire Audible catalogue to keep forever.
Unlimited listening to the Plus Catalogue - thousands of select Audible Originals, podcasts and audiobooks.

Charles Paris Dramatisations
22 books in series

The Longmire Defense is the most recent (2023) in Craig Johnson's Walt Longmire series. It's £0.99 in the UK right now.

Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0BVJ6WY2G
Kobo UK: https://www.kobo.com/gb/en/ebook/the-longmire-defense-2

Spoiler:
Quote:
Walt Longmire faces one of his most challenging crime scenes as he tries to reckon with the revelations of his last case where he confronted the ghosts of his past and questioned the very nature of justice and mercy in the hard country of the West.

Deep in the heart of the Wyoming countryside, Sheriff of Absaroka County, Walt Longmire, is called to a crime scene like few others that he has seen. This crime brings up issues that go back to Walt's grandfather's time in Wyoming, as the revelations he learns about his grandfather come back to offer clues and motives for Walt's investigation. Filled with back-country action, and with the great cast of characters that readers have come to love with the Longmire series, this new book will be sure to satisfy both long-time readers and those new to the series.

If you've read and liked Colin Cotterill's short four-book Jimm Juree series, you may already know that Cotterill also has published a number of short stories featuring Juree. And the first one, Number One: The Funeral Photographer, is free right now at Kindle US and UK, but sadly not at Kobo, at least as of now. And if you haven't read any of the books, maybe this can be your intro to the series ...

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B074N2NFP1
Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B074N2NFP1

Spoiler:
Quote:
The Funeral Photographer is the first in a new series of Colin Cotterill short stories featuring his female news reporter and detective, Jimm Juree. Fans of Jimm know her from the four novels where, with the help of the members of her strange family, she usually solves the crime. Move over Miss Marple, Jimm Juree does it for the 21st Century. In this story, Jimm, exiled from the north of Thailand and just about surviving in the south, finds a new career by accident. Being Jimm, a crime is never far away. We will be adding to this short story series every couple of months. Collect them all.

And, if you like the short story, and want more, they are $1.99 each for the rest, but the first ten are also available in a couple of box sets (1-5, and 6-10) for $6.95/£5.49 each. Me, I'll probably keep my fingers crossed that maybe the publisher will work their way through the short stories for free if I'm patient...but we'll see...

Calico by Lee Goldberg is $2 at Amazon, but $3 at B&N and Kobo

Quote:
There's a saying in Barstow, California, a decaying city in the scorching Mojave desert . . .

The Interstate here only goes in one direction: Away.

But it's the only place where ex-LAPD detective Beth McDade, after a staggering fall from grace, could get another badge . . . and a shot at redemption.

Over a century ago, and just a few miles further into the bleak landscape, a desperate stranger ended up in Calico, a struggling mining town, also hoping for a second chance.

His fate, all those years ago, and hers today are linked when Beth investigates an old skeleton dug up in a shallow, sandy grave . . . and also tries to identify a vagrant run-over by a distracted motorhome driver during a lightning storm.

Every disturbing clue she finds, every shocking discovery she makes, force Beth to confront her own troubled past . . . and a past that's not her own . . . until it all smashes together in a revelation that could change the world.

Besides winning points for the hardest author name to spell that I've run across recently, Edward Sklepowich has written a nice nine-book series set in Venice, Italy - the Urbino Macintyre series.* And right now the last book in the series, The Veils of Venice, is only $0.25 at Kindle US.* *And, although it's a bit odd to start with the last book, if you decide to start with this one, and like it, the others are published by Mysterious Press/Open Road, which means they go on sale pretty often.* * *Which is always nice to know when starting a series...

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00QN3528S

Spoiler:
Quote:
Investigating a killing, Macintyre finds it to be a family affair

As snow falls on Venice, turning the city into an elaborate gothic confection, Gaby Pindar fears for her life. Crippled by intense agoraphobia, she hasn’t left her family home in two decades, instead dedicating herself to tending to the small collection of historical trinkets that make up the family museum. When she begins receiving death threats, she begs for help from her cousin, the Contessa da Capo-Zendrini, whose friend Urbino Macintyre is something of an amateur sleuth. But the search takes a gruesome turn when Gaby’s sister, Olimpia, turns up dead.

The contessa finds Olimpia murdered in her home, the maid kneeling above her with a bloody pair of scissors. Convinced of the maid’s innocence, Macintyre digs into the Pindar family history, discovering centuries’ worth of intrigue that have finally erupted in blood.

Four of the five Ripley novels by Patricia Highsmith are currently on sale for $2.99 apiece at Amazon US, Kobo, and B&N.

#2. Ripley Under Ground
Ensconced on a French estate with a wealthy wife, a world-class art collection, and a past to hide, Ripley is threatened with exposure when an art forgery goes awry.

#3. Ripley's Game
Ripley relishes the opportunity to simultaneously repay an insult and help a friend commit a crime―and escape the doldrums of his idyllic retirement.

#4. The Boy Who Followed Ripley
Highsmith explores Ripley's bizarrely paternal relationship with a troubled young runaway, whose abduction draws them into Berlin's seamy underworld.

#5. Ripley Under Water
Ripley is confronted by a snooping American couple obsessed with the disappearance of an art collector who visited Ripley years before.
