I like to go with a case because the case makes it easier to wake the ereader and put it to sleep.

I bought a case for my Oasis but ended up taking it off because it became unwieldy and the extra weight made it difficult to use one-handed. I now use a felt sleeve for both my e-readers to protect the screen when not in use.

I keep mine in a sleep cover. I'm not sure why - I take it with me in a small backpack most of the time, and all the electronic devices in there have some form of protection.
I dropped my previous ereader (while reading & walking) twice, and the only noticeable damage was nicks in the corners - not sure if the cover had any influence on this, but I was happy with the result. Occasionally, I'll remove the cover while reading - typically when reading in a calm place, when the added weight makes it uncomfortable. I like to read while in my bath, and less weight in hand makes me more confident I won' t drop the ereader (it's supposed to be waterproof, but better safe than sorry). |

I go without a case because I find it easier to hold and read.
But I do have an ebook padded pouch I use when travelling so I can protect the reader. |

I read mostly at home and I read all but one kindle with no cover. The Oasis2 doesn't go in a cover at all anymore. Just to annoying after a while. I had the original, then got one of those snap in one and it was just too heavy. Much more comfortable out. I don't worry about it. I have no kids or dogs and always lay it face down. Its my most used right now. I also bought a basic recently and wont even bother every getting a cover for it. If I ever take it along, I'll just put it in a sleeve. But I don't really read much out and about.
My Oasis1 always stays in the cover. Mostly because the device battery is getting a bit up in age and I have 2 covers for it so can just flip through them before charging anything. It lives upstairs now and lasts forever as I don't grab it much. My Voyage only lives in its cover now as I don't use it much. I can only use one kindle at a time after all. |

I always go with a case. My book reader goes through too much to be unprotected.

I never liked "naked" devices, be they phones, tablets or ereaders. For my phones, I use a bumpercase, for my tablets and ereaders a folio-type case (to better protect the screens against scratching). The phones and tablets also have a screenprotector (if there's one thing I hate more than "naked" devices, it's glass screen for touching, thankfully the screen of the Kobo is matte...)

A case makes the Reader much easier to hold. Plus, a case makes it easy to put the reader in sleep/wake. A case protects against the screen getting scratched. A case gives some protection against the screen getting broken on a drop (not 100% but better than without). A case can also look nice.
There is no good reason not to use a case. |

When I had a reader with an easily removable case I took it off when reading at home because I found the reader more comfortable to hold without the case. I was usually reading on a soft couch or bed next to a carpeted floor so risk of drop damage was minimal. (I did put the case on when taking the reader elsewhere.) The only damage occurred when something fell on the screen from above while I was reading. |
