"Update Your Kindle" always grayed out with custom

I'm trying to use update_usbnetwork-k2.bin

Obtained from: http://jyavariousideas.blogspot.com/...rmware-23.html

The option "Update Your Kindle" in Settings' menu is grayed out so I just restart the Kindle 2 and it tries to update but I get error #0003.

This is what I'm doing.
I connect the kindle 2.3 to usb.
I browse to it (I'm a Win Xp user)

I copy update_usbnetwork-k2.bin
to the root of the kindle.
I goto the tray and left click disconnect the k2.
Then I go to the Menu and its greyed out

What am I doing wrong?

I think the bin file needs to be unpacked first?

You need to use the correct update file. The K2 bin is for the no-longer-produced US Kindle, the K2i bin is for the Global Wireless Kindle 2 (aka K2 International) that is the only kindle 2 sold now.

Make sure you are using the correct bin file. If your K2 is the international version you need to use the K2i.bin file. I had the same problem until i realized there was a difference. On the K2 international the k2.bin files don't work and remain grayed out. You can tell if it is an international version by looking at the serial number on the lower back of the kindle. If it starts with B003 it is an international version and you will need to find the K2i.bin files for it.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, I did read something similar elsewhere but its true.
I wish it was more well known that new K2's are really K2i's.
