Adobe Unveils Digital Viewer Technology for Magazines

http://www.adobe.com/aboutadobe/pres...talViewer.html

Quote:
Adobe Systems Incorporated (Nasdaq:ADBE) has unveiled a new digital viewer technology that enables print publishers to bring stunning digital versions of their magazines to life. This new publishing software was developed with input from Condé Nast’s WIRED magazine, a publication that recently debuted a digital edition for Apple iPad, utilizing the new digital viewer technology. WIRED’s June issue Reader application, now available through the Apple iTunes App Store, is built using Adobe’s digital viewer software.
Quote:
“We aim to make our digital viewer software available to all publishers soon and plan to deliver versions that work across multiple hardware platforms. It’s safe to say that if you are already working in InDesign CS5, you’ll be well on your way to producing a beautiful digital version of your publication.”
Pretty interesting-they are combining InDesign CS5 with an Objective-C compiler to get App Store approval.

Bundle Diving into the Wired App: http://laytonduncan.tumblr.com/post/...wired-ipad-app

One question which cropped up almost immediately was how are they handling the two different orientations? The answer is simple, there are two versions of every single asset in the app. The asset list in each stack specifies separate resources for landscape or portrait view, as does the overlay list.
Yikes...no wonder its 500MB.

I would be perfectly happy if the app only worked in portrait, but was formatted for iPad screen size. oh and was half the size!

What they're really doing is making an image of each page and linking them together. No text search, no copy and paste, just a series of images.
