Sure would be nice if Sony would let people know about specials like these instead of having to pull out your machete and hack your way through to find them.

It's surprising. Poor marketing?

These are all good quality, current books. If Sony promoted these freebies in their advertising, they might sell more devices.

Does Amazon do a better job?

But hiding them gives you the thrill of discovery! That way, you know that ebook reading is an special club, and only the most ardent devotees will get the best deals!

That's how most businesses survive--by convincing their customers that the bargains at their store involve stealth and and cunning, so that only the most clever have access to them. This creates a feeling of elitism among their customers, which in turn convinces them to continue shopping at an establishment that treats them with the respect their cleverness deserves!

Isn't that how brick-and-mortar bookstores do it? Hide the bargain books in the middle of the other ones, so you have to pull them off the shelf to find out which ones have lower prices, so when you find a bargain, you feel like you've won a prize?

The book 'Free-Range Chickens' by Simon Rich is very funny. It is only 133 pages on my Reader on the small font. It is all dialogue and each chapter is about 2 pages. Since it's a free download....worth every penny.

Thanks. I now have them on my Reader.

Very nice freebies, too bad for Sony that they don't make more advertising for them.
I checked the latest Sony store newsletter, its only mentioned the fantasy magazine free download, and only at the end of the newsletter.

I missed it too--it was free in the morning; by the time I got back from work and had time to download, it was full price again.

And there was a banner ad on the first page, claiming 4 free books--only one of which was actually available as free.

Click 'Specials' tab at top, then 'Bargain Priced' link on upper left, and there's a category mid-page of Free eBooks Bonanza that has most of the freebies.

Private by Kate Brian is free right now too. (Stumbled on it by accident)

Quote:
Tradition, Honor, Excellence...and secrets so dark they're almost invisible

Fifteen-year-old Reed Brennan wins a scholarship to Easton Academy -- the golden ticket away from her pill-popping mother and run-of-the-mill suburban life. But when she arrives on the beautiful, tradition-steeped campus of Easton, everyone is just a bit more sophisticated, a bit more gorgeous, and a lot wealthier than she ever thought possible. Reed realizes that even though she has been accepted to Easton, Easton has not accepted her. She feels like she's on the outside, looking in.

Until she meets the Billings Girls.

They are the most beautiful, intelligent, and intensely confident girls on campus. And they know it. They hold all the power in a world where power is fleeting but means everything. Reed vows to do whatever it takes to be accepted into their inner circle.

Reed uses every part of herself -- the good, the bad, the beautiful -- to get closer to the Billings Girls. She quickly discovers that inside their secret parties and mountains of attitude, hanging in their designer clothing-packed closets the Billings Girls have skeletons. And they'll do anything to keep their secrets private.
