FREE (and bargain) books for the Kindle - July 2011

It's a new month and there are new freebies. Several bargains from last month remain, so be sure to check the previous thread, HERE.

This is the sticky thread for free and bargain books in the Kindle store for July 2011. Rather than try to update the first post with a list of all the books, which is continually changing, instead new books will be posted at the end of the thread and each month there will be a new thread, letting the old one drop off the top of the forum. Anyone can post to the thread, but there are a few rules:
  1. Only books in the kindle store. Yes, I realize that free books elsewhere will often work on the Kindle, but those should be reported in the Deals forum. This list is for those who only get their books from the Kindle store (and there are many who do) and don't want to deal with having to download and transfer books from elsewhere.
  2. Do not edit old messages to add new books. Most people read this thread by clicking to see new posts. If you edit old messages, then no one is notified of a new post and often won't see the updates when they click to see new messages. If you need to edit an old message to correct a link or other info (or even want to note a book that is no longer free), that is perfectly ok.
  3. No shortened URL's. No one likes to click on a link and end up somewhere that they were not expecting and few of the URL shorteners allow you to set up a preview mode so that you get a chance to see the destination first. So, use the full URL in your posting (yes, you can still just post a link on the title, but with the full URL, everyone can look at the status line or use Copy Shortcut to see where they will go before the new site opens).
  4. No author self-promotions (unless your book is free in the Kindle store) or self-published books. If you are a Kindle author and posting another's work, it should be either a non-self-published book or one that you've read to the end and would not feel embarrassed to recommend to your mother, closest friends and priest/minister (assuming they read the same genre). In other words, the writing is exceptional (no misspellings or substituted words, grammar rules obeyed formatting that looks good on the Kindle screen). It isn't that we don't want you to post, but author self-promotions can overwhelm the list and a special child forum in the Deals and Bargains section has been provided for this purpose.
  5. No excerpts or sample chapters (business minis are ok, so long as they are not just samples of another book)
  6. Please indicate the price of any book that is not being offered free. You don't have to say "free" if one is, but it would be nice if you include that in the message. The maximum price for bargains is a bit flexible, but generally under $2 and nothing over $5, unless it is a volume that contains several titles in one and the total price per book puts it into the bargain realm or the digital price is below 25% of the list print price and 50% of the digital list price; this lets you include high priced reference books or cookbooks that are extremely heavily discounted, for one reason or another (but, let's not include books that Amazon has at $9.99 all the time, ok?).
  7. If you see the genre of a book and it isn't clear from the book description that you post, please include it; conversely, if someone leaves this off, don't post to berate them, but you can post to include that info for others.
  8. If you are posting a book that is free in the UK Amazon store, please say so. Also, if you do not have your current location set in your profile (below your name, it shows next to all of your posts), then add that to your post (as it "this is free here in Canada"). To all: please note that whether or not a book is free in a country other than the one a person is logged into is not easily discovered. The person who posts often has no way to determine that you will pay a different amount if you are in a different country. Also, prices at Amazon can change minute to minute and freebies can last as little as an hour (possibly less), so always check the price before one-clicking. If you discover that a book costs more (other than the "standard" $2+VAT international fee Amazon often takes onto books outside the US), you may leave a single comment with the country and price/restriction (for example: "This book costs $9.99 in the UK" or "Not available in Canada").
  9. Try to keep chit-chat to a minimum. That will keep notifications of a new message in the thread down to (generally) only when a new book has been posted, making the thread more useful for all.
If you agree or disagree with the rules, have more to be added, etc, please send me a private message, rather than replying here. I'll discuss it with the moderators and we'll modify as needed.

NOTE: This post is currently being reviewed and will be updated to remove those that are no longer free, as well as add those that are free as of July 1. Until this notice is removed, the selections below may include those that went back up in price sometime in June. Also see the thread from last month for latest freebies.

Here are all the current freebies that are actually "books" (self-contained, at least a short story or novella), arranged by genre. The list can change at any time (one freebie posted this morning was already back to full price by evening), so always check the current price before clicking to purchase.

Description
The Dragon King Seeks His Princess—

Who Dares to Stop Him?

Princess Una of Parumvir has come of age and will soon marry. She dreams of a charming prince, but when her first suitor arrives, he's not what she'd hoped. Prince Aethelbald of mysterious Farthestshore has travelled a great distance to prove his love—and also to bring hushed warnings of danger. A dragon is rumored to be on the hunt and blazing a path of terror.

Una, smitten instead with a more dashing prince, refuses Aethelbald's offer—and ignores his cautions with dire consequences. Soon the Dragon King himself is in Parumvir and Una, in giving her heart away unwisely, finds herself in his sights. Only those courageous enough to risk everything have a hope of fighting off this advancing evil.

The Outsider: A Novel by Ann H. Gabhart (Christian)

Quote:
Product Description
For as long as she can remember, Gabrielle Hope has had the gift of knowing--visions that warn of things to come. When she and her mother joined the Pleasant Hill Shaker community in 1807, the community embraced her gift. But Gabrielle fears this gift, for the visions are often ones of sorrow and tragedy. When one of these visions comes to pass, a local doctor must be brought in to save the life of a young man, setting into motion a chain of events that will challenge Gabrielle's loyalty to the Shakers. As she falls deeper into a forbidden love for this man of the world, Gabrielle must make a choice. Can she experience true happiness in this simple and chaste community? Or will she abandon her brothers and sisters for a life of the unknown?

Soulful and filled with romance, The Outsider lets readers live within a bygone time among a unique and peculiar people. This tender and thought-provoking story will leave readers wanting more from this writer.

The Maverick Experiment by Drew Berquist is free again at the Kindle store

Quote:
Product Description
Breaking all the rules, a battle-hardened group of fighters confront Afghan terrorists on their own terms

In wartime, some operations have to be conducted outside the normal lines of authority. Nowhere is this more true than in modern Afghanistan, the setting for this riveting military thriller.

Derek Stevens is an experienced interrogator fluent in multiple languages and highly trained in weapons and escape and evasion techniques. He is the ideal candidate to lead a crew on a top-secret mission into Afghanistan to neutralize Taliban leaders. That mission, as it turns out, is much more challenging than even he had expected.

Stevens’ assignment leads him and his maverick warriors through the most dangerous prison in Kabul and into the Pakistani heartland of the terrorist resistance. Working deep undercover, they deliver tough justice to the world’s toughest terrorists.

Drawn from the author’s own experiences with the U.S. intelligence and Special Operations communities, The Maverick Experiment reveals the inner workings of the international intelligence machine and the gritty, blood-soaked reality of life on the front lines of the war in Afghanistan.

Tuscan Holiday, by Holly Chamberlin

Book Description
In this smart, tender, insightful new novel, bestselling author Holly Chamberlin introduces two very different women who, over the course of two unforgettable weeks, learn about unbreakable bonds, unshakeable love, and the chances that come once in a lifetime -- and change us forever...When Elizabeth Caldwell planned a trip to Florence with her daughter, Marina, she secretly hoped for a warm, fuzzy bonding experience worthy of a Lifetime movie. But Marina -- twenty-one, newly graduated, and close to her mom in many ways -- has always been more the PBS type: dependable, practical, and completely in control. Elizabeth knows Marina wants to avoid the kind of "stupid mistake" that left Elizabeth a single mother at twenty-two, and she's bitten her tongue as Marina settles for a wealthy fiance who gives her everything she thinks she wants. After all, Elizabeth? -- unable to bring herself to fully commit to the man she has dated for years -- is hardly an expert in romance. Still, a lot can happen on vacation, especially in Tuscany, where every scent borne on the warm breeze inspires delight, and every view makes the heart soar. There, on streets once walked by Dante and Michaelangelo, Marina is blindsided by a gorgeous Italian named Luca who shows her how gloriously unpredictable passion can be, and Elizabeth finally lets go of the role that has defined her for so long to embrace her own uncertain future...

Bake Sale Murder, by Leslie Meier, is the thirteenth in her Lucy Stone series.

Book Description
Ever since local developer Fred Stanton and his wife, Mimi, built five modular homes next door to Lucy Stone's farmhouse, life just hasn't been the same. With Mimi complaining about everything from the state of Lucy's lawn to another neighbor's lovable dog, quaint Tinker's Cove, Maine, is now entangled in cul-de-sac politics and backstabbing. And when Mimi doesn't show up for her shift at The Hat and Mitten Fund bake sale, the scent of burnt sugar leads Lucy to a shocking discovery: Mimi, face down on her kitchen floor--with a knife in her back.

While the police start their investigation, Lucy gets busy writing up the murder for the local Pennysaver--and following a few leads of her own. Lucy knows the women in her neighborhood didn't like Mimi, but they certainly didn't want her dead...right?

Hunted By The Others, by Jess Haines

Book Description
They are the Others--the vampires, mages, and werewolves once thought to exist only in our imaginations. Now they're stepping out of the shadows, and nothing in our world will ever be the same again. . .

In A Town Like This, Being A P.I. Can Be Murder

Shiarra Waynest's detective work was dangerous enough when her client base was strictly mortal. But ailing finances have forced her to accept a lucrative case that could save her firm--if it doesn't kill her first. Shiarra has signed on to work for a high-level mage to recover an ancient artifact owned by one of New York's most powerful vampires.

As soon as Shiarra meets sexy, mesmerizing vamp Alec Royce, she knows her assignment is even more complicated than she thought. With a clandestine anti-Other group trying to recruit her, and magi being eliminated, Shiarra needs back-up and enlists her ex-boyfriend--a werewolf whose non-furry form is disarmingly appealing--and a nerdy mage with surprising talents. But it may not be enough. In a city where the undead roam, magic rules, and even the Others aren't always what they seem, Shiarra has just become the secret weapon in a battle between good and evil--whether she likes it or not. . .

The Romance of Tristan and Iseult, by Joseph Bedier, Vincent Nicolosi (Editor) and Hilaire Belloc (Translator), published by Fonthill Press, is free in the Kindle store (as is a scanned edition of this classic). Likely a pricing error or short-term promotion, as the hardcover edition is coming out in October.

Book Description
The most complete and beautiful version of Joseph Bedier's classic ever to appear in English includes Gaston Paris's original Preface, Bedier's historic essay "On the Nature of the Legend of Tristan and Iseult," and Vincent Nicolosi's Introduction, which sheds light on the tale's Celtic nature and origins. Joseph Bedier published Le Roman de Tristan et Iseut in 1900 in Paris. A few years later, Hilaire Belloc introduced the English-speaking world to this marvelous tale-or rather part of this tale. One shortcoming of Belloc's otherwise compelling and exquisite translation is that he omitted, suppressed, so very much-in fact, four chapters, either in their entirety or in part, along with a scattering of sections, phrases, and single words. Some of Belloc's omissions were inexplicable, though he obviously found certain passages too steamy and indelicate. Now, Fonthill Press makes available the most complete, exquisite, and definitive edition of Joseph Bedier's The Romance of Tristan and Iseult to ever appear in the English language.

Einstein's Refrigerator: And Other Stories from the Flip Side of History by Steve Silverman is free at the US Kindle store

Quote:
Product Description
Steve Silverman was looking for a way to add some spice to his high school lectures when he realized that weird and bizarre true-life stories would capture his students' attention. In fact, they worked so well that the science teacher then began posting his discoveries to his own Web site, which he dubbed Useless Information. Well-researched and clearly sourced, Silverman's unusual tidbits have gained a wide following. In Einstein's Refridgerator, Silverman collects more than 30 of the most fascinating stories he has gathered - tales of forgotten genius, great blunders, and incredible feats of survival, as well as answers to puzzling questions. Einstein's Refridgerator is a remarkable book with spellbinding stories. Whatever happened to the refrigerator Einstein helped invent? While it never became a commercial success, its underlying concepts became the basis for cooling nuclear breeder reactors.
