Marryat, Florence: The Blood of the Vampire. v1. 24 Jul 2021

Harriet Brandt is the daughter of a mad scientist and a mixed-race voodoo priestess, who were killed when their slaves revolted. The story follows Harriet’s career in Europe after she leaves the Jamaican convent where she grew up, and her ill-fated attempts to integrate with Victorian society. Although everyone is initially attracted to Harriet, people who get close to her seem to sicken and die.

This Gothic novel entertains such key debates as race, heredity, women’s rights, and the occult. Critics frequently compare it to both Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1897) and Sheridan Le Fanu’s Carmilla (1872).
==========
Florence Marryat (9 July 1833 – 27 October 1899) was a British author and actress. The daughter of author Capt. Frederick Marryat, she was particularly known for her sensational novels and her involvement with several celebrated spiritual mediums of the late 19th century. She was a prolific author, writing around 70 books, as well as newspaper and magazine articles, short stories and works for the stage.

From 1876 to 1890, she had a performing career in dramas, comedies, and comic opera; and also appeared as a lecturer, dramatic reader and public entertainer.
