Dave Duncan's A Man of His Word is $2.99 at a Amazon.com.

Higly recommended

I read it many years ago but I think a reread is in order.

Quote:
These four fantasy novels of love and adventure follow the exploits of childhood friends Inos and Rap as their feelings are tested by the direst of circumstances. But while abduction, magic, and imprisonment conspire to separate them, the two remain steadfast in their determination to be together.

Magic Casement: Inos enjoys an idyllic childhood with her friend Rap, but friendship between a princess and a stable boy can never be simple. Soon, they are thrust into adulthood and a magical world full of infinite surprises.

Faery Lands Forlorn: When Inos is abducted through the magic casement and Rap tries to follow her, they arrive in two very strange new lands. With Rap in Faerie and Inos in Zark, they are at opposite ends of the world, but that doesn’t stop the young stable boy from heading to Zark to rescue his princess. And Inos is equally determined to head home to Krasnegar to claim her kingdom.

Perilous Seas: Hunted by the fearsome warlock wardens who rule the world, Inos is convinced that Rap has died. Little does she know, he is alive and, with the aid of his magic wand, trying to bring happiness to his beloved queen. But when the evil Nordland raider, Kalkor, arrives in port, Rap’s plans begin to fall apart.

Emperor and Clown: With Inos married to the wrong man and Rap dying in a dungeon, their cause seems hopeless. Only Aunt Kade refuses to admit defeat. Taking events into her own hands, she knows exactly the five men she can coerce into helping her . . .

Here's something different.

The Grey Bastards by Jonathan French is $1.99 at Amazon US.

Quote:
Jackal and his fellow half-orcs patrol the barren wastes of the Lot Lands, spilling their own damned blood to keep civilized folk safe. A rabble of hard-talking, hog-riding, whore-mongering brawlers they may be, but the Grey Bastards are Jackal’s sworn brothers, fighting at his side in a land where there’s no room for softness.

And once Jackal’s in charge—as soon as he can unseat the Bastards’ tyrannical, seemingly unkillable founder—there’s a few things they’ll do different. Better.

Or at least, that’s the plan. Until the fallout from a deadly showdown makes Jackal start investigating the Lot Lands for himself. Soon, he’s wondering if his feelings have blinded him to ugly truths about this world, and the Bastards’ place in it.

In a quest for answers that takes him from decaying dungeons to the frontlines of an ancient feud, Jackal finds himself battling invading orcs, rampaging centaurs, and grubby human conspiracies alike—along with a host of dark magics so terrifying they’d give even the heartiest Bastard pause.

Finally, Jackal must ride to confront a threat that’s lain in wait for generations, even as he wonders whether the Bastards can—or should--survive.

Open Road has been pushing Duncan's backlist lately. The Seventh Sword is on sale for $2.99 CDN at Kobo Canada; $2.69 if you're a VIP member. Also on at Amazon Canada.

Sadly, A Man of His Word isn't on sale at Kobo Canada, but it is at Amazon Canada. You could always price match at Kobo if you don't mind store credit.

Garth Nix is on my top 3, 5, whatever list of authors. He writes for Young Adult and Juvenile. If I remember correctly I've fully enjoyed all of his Young Adult books, while the Juvenile ones never satisfied me. His collections of short stories are also good.

Just to mention that The Seventh Sword includes the original trilogy (The Reluctant Swordsman, The Coming of Wisdom and The Destiny of the Sword) as well as the 24 years later addition, The Death of Nnanji.

Possibly because Dave Duncan died fairly recently so a last push to sell a bunch of his books, I've seen lots of sales on other authors shortly after they die (e.g. lots of Ursala K. Leguin books seemed to go on sale after she died).

An unparalleled classic!

THESE ARE the stories that the Dogs tell when the fires burn high and the wind is from the north. Then each family circle gathers at the hearthstone and the pups sit silently and listen and when the story’s done they ask many questions:
“What is Man?” they’ll ask.
Or perhaps: “What is a city?”
Or “What is a war?”

At least they didn't revive the cover from the SF Masterworks edition though it does seem to prove my belief that few cover artists ever read the book.

Sometimes (I don't know how frequently) a publisher "requests" a specific subject be included on the cover art. Difficult refusing the person who signs the check.

I'd have to go back and re-read, but I believe that ants play a disturbing role towards the end of the book.

I don't know if I would call it disturbing. The ants did enclose much of the world inside their building. However when Jenkins woke Jon Webster and asked how to deal with ants, Jenkins deciding not to use the human solution of poisoning the ants (sweet syrup and a slow poison) was enough to make you wonder about whether the robot was a better "human".

This version also includes the epilog written as a part of a tribute to John W. Campbell 20 years after the last story. I'm conflicted on that story much as Clifford D. Simak was according to his introductory notes.
