Since it's Tor published, they are DRM free so I cross post
The key is "Tor.com original" - all originally appeared on the publisher's site and were later published. Some are free. This week's Wildside Press Tuesday freebie is for:
The Charles V. de Vet MINIPACK™ (ISFDB) Charles V. de Vet (1911-1997) published more than 50 in the science fiction field over a period of 31 years, starting with “The Unexpected Weapon” (included here) for Amazing Stories in 1950. His early work was fun action-adventure, often of the “space opera” type. The Charles V. de Vet MINIPACK™ presents 7 of his classic works—228 pages of great sci-fi reading! Also, StoryBundle has for the next 2 weeks the following: The Write Stuff Bundle chock-full of assorted guides for aspiring authors, written by established ones, including things by Vonda N. McIntyre (Hugo & Nebula winner, whom you may also know from her early Star Trek tie-in novels), Judith Tarr (one of my favourite alternate-history authors, who also raises horses and her offering is a book on how to accurately portray horses in your fantasy/history), Kristine Kathryn Rusch (former editor of the Magazine of Science Fiction & Fantasy), Laura Resnick (DAW-published fantasy author who also writes romances, her book is on the latter). It's pay-what-you-want for the first 6 books, but the $15 top tier gets you 5 more titles (including the really interesting-looking ones, IMHO), and a 40% discount code off a future purchase of some kind of epublishing software (Jutoh 2). The Humble Bundle for the next week or so is: Humble Make: Book Bundle, featuring titles by and assembled from the eponymous DIY tech tinkering magazine, many of which are also published by O'Reilly. Frankly, this one's been popular enough that the pay-more-than-average price is just under the $15 top-tier, so you might as well get the lot. Lots of DIY robotics stuff, and some fashion-crafting, and a few kid-friendly project guides, etc., with more titles to be added tomorrow. Name your price for Making Makers: Kids, Tools, and the Future of Innovation, Tinkering: Kids Learn by Making Stuff, Making Simple Robots: Exploring Cutting-Edge Robotics with Everyday Stuff, Make: Technology on Your Time Volume 41: Tinkering Toys, and LEO the Maker Prince: Journeys in 3D Printing. If you pay more than the average price, you'll also get Make: Rockets: Down-to-Earth Rocket Science, Make: Electronics (Learning by Discovery), Fashioning Technology: A DIY Intro to Smart Crafting, Make: Basic Arduino Projects: 26 Experiments with Microcontrollers and Electronics, Make: School's Out Summer Fun Guide, and Make: Getting Started with Raspberry Pi, 2nd Edition. If you pay $15 or more, you'll receive all of the above plus The Best of MAKE and Zero to Maker: Learn (Just Enough) to Make (Just About) Anything. |

This week's Wildside Press freebie is:
The Jerome Bixby MINIPACK™ (ISFDB, Wikipedia) Fun fact: the late Mr. Bixby once wrote a short story which may or may not have been the inspiration for one of our fellow MR member's forum handle: Tubemonkey Jerome Bixby (1923 – 1998) was an American short story writer, editor, and scriptwriter, best known for his work in science fiction. He also wrote many westerns and used the pseudonyms Jay Lewis Bixby, D. B. Lewis, Harry Neal, Albert Russell, J. Russell, M. St. Vivant, Thornecliff Herrick and Alger Rome (for one collaboration with Algis Budrys). He is most famous for the 1953 story “It’s a Good Life” which was the basis for a 1961 episode of The Twilight Zone and which was included in Twilight Zone: The Movie (1983). He also wrote four episodes for the Star Trek series: “Mirror, Mirror,” “Day of the Dove,” “Requiem for Methuselah,” and “By Any Other Name.” With Otto Klement, he co-wrote the story upon which the classic sci-fi movie Fantastic Voyage (1966), television series, and novel by Isaac Asimov were based (as well the third episode of the The Magic Schoolbus, ‘Inside Relphie’). Bixby’s final work was the screenplay for the 2007 cult sci-fi film The Man From Earth. The Jerome Bixby MINIPACK™ collects 5 of his classic science fiction stories. Also a reminder that the Humble Make: Book Bundle ends tomorrow on Wednesday at 11 AM, and among the additions to the more-than-average tier is an interesting-looking book on DIY Coffee, which is not so much about making actual coffee oneself, but for making the coffee-making tools such as your own quote-unquote "Bottomless Espresso Portafilter". And the week's Agate freebies have now shown up as DRM-free PDF direct downloads available worldwide for the benefit of international Gentle Readers and can be found under the usual auto-search tag link: drm-free ebook Last edited by ATDrake; 05-26-2015 at 02:04 PM. Tuesday Wildside Press freebie is up, and it's for a vintage children's adventures tales by a guy who was apparently best known for being a psychic researcher (kind of like how William Moulton Marston, creator of Wonder Woman, is best known outside of comic book circles for inventing the lie detector):
Tahara Among African Tribes by Harold Sherman (Wikipedia) Harold Morrow Sherman (1898-1987) was most famous as a psychic researcher and New Thought author. His Your Key to Happiness (1935) has been reprinted numerous times. He also had a second career as an author of children’s books, and it should come as no surprise that in the Tahara series, he blended classic New Thought elements such as mentalism, spiritualism, and the supernatural with exciting adventure stories aimed at young boys. The mix works well for the globe-trotting young heroes, and their exciting adventures around the world hold up well today. Tahara Among African Tribes (originally published in 1933) is the first (of 4) volumes about Tahara. The complete series is available as The Tahara Boy Adventurer MEGAPACK™ from Wildside Press. StoryBundle has a new offering for the next 2 weeks or so: The Epic Fantasy Bundle (2015), with titles chosen by media tie-in and Dune continuation author Kevin J. Anderson, as a mix of new and established authors (probably mostly from Anderson's WordFire Press imprint, which is also sold via Baen's e-bookstore). At the pay-what-you want level (apparently a minimum $5 if you try setting the sliders), you get 6 books (1 of which has shown up in the Humble Bundle Sci-Fi eBook Bundle 2 presented by WordFire Press, at the top tier level): there's an anthology of unicorn stories featuring a new tale by Peter S. Beagle (who should not need any introduction in the field of unicorn tales), a humorous urban fantasy by frequent Anne McCaffrey co-writer Jody Lynn Nye, and a few works by other established authors, including noted fantasy comic illustrator James A. Owen (of Starchild fame). At the $15 top-tier, there's a bonus 4 novels and 2 novellas, which include among them works by YA fantasy author Sherwood Smith, Hugo winner Paolo Bacigalupi and Hugo-nominated Tobias S. Bucknell in a shared world setting that was originally published by Audible Frontiers. And as a bonus for subscribing to the newsletter, everyone gets a free novella that's a collaboration between Anderson himself and Neil Peart of the Canadian rock band Rush. NB: unlike Humble Bundle, there seems to be no way to top up your purchase to upgrade to a higher tier, so please be sure of which level you actually might want to get before splurging. And over at Bag of Holding, if you're a Lovecraftian RPG fan, there's currently a bundle available from Pelgrane Press' gamebooks: Trail of Cthulhu (Wikipedia) for the next 13 days Starter Collection level at $9.95 includes 4 titles (well, 3 titles and what looks like a 4-song soundtrack):
Bonus Collection at pay-more than average (currently just under $24) adds 5 supplementary titles:
Here's the publisher's dedicated mini-site about the game, and their blog page with links to sample excerpts and the like. The total approximate retail cost of these is $109. You can download your PDFs/mp3s for a limited time directly from the site, and they'll also be added to your library over at DriveThruRPG.com for permanent retrieval. Again, there's no obvious way to top up your bundle from a lower tier, so be sure of what you want to get before purchase. Also, 10 percent of it goes to the Cancer Research UK charity, if you're interested. Last edited by ATDrake; 06-02-2015 at 02:57 PM. Reason: Oops, linkage would be good, Y/N? |

New Humble Bundle is up, and it's for:
Humble School's Out Book Bundle presented by No Starch Press It's a mix of geeky science/tech toys & programming books, quite a few oriented at the kid-friendly level, but some others suitable for all ages. I personally recommend the Manga Guide to Databases graphic novel, which I also own in a paper edition along with others in the series, and is a translation of a university-level Japanese work with text contributions by a professor. Tiers as follows (current average is under $9, but I expect this to climb sharply, as the previous No Starch HB did), top-tier is $17, more books to be added next week. Quote:
The Dynamite Comic-Con Omnibus Bundle has a variety of comics across various genres, in complete story-arcs with a minimum 10 issues equivalent for each series. This seems like pretty good value, even if you have some overlap from previous Dynamite comics bundles. Last edited by ATDrake; 06-17-2015 at 02:28 PM. |

A new Percy Westerman novel at Gutenberg
The industrious gnomes at Project Gutenberg have dropped a 'new' Percy Westerman novel today! "A Watch-dog of the North Sea" is another story of the Royal Navy during the Great (First World) War.
Gutenberg has a pile of young adult adventure novels by Westerman. They aren't all WWI stories; there is a nice variety, everything from knights-in-armor to airships and submarines! They don't qualify for life+70, so we can't post them here. But, as always, Project Gutenberg products are both FREE and DRM-FREE! |

The Fifth Amendment: Historic Supreme Court Decisions (Constitutional Law Series)
This casebook contains a selection of historic Supreme Court decisions that interpret the provisions of the Fifth Amendment to the Constitution. Concurring and dissenting opinions are included. The full text of the U.S. Constitution is also included. LE adds Amendment 5 No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a Grand Jury, except in cases arising in the land or naval forces, or in the Militia, when in actual service in time of War or public danger; nor shall any person be subject for the same offense to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb; nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation. So a whole raft of things, no Court Martial for civilians, no double jeopardy, no forced incrimination, due process, just compensation. And thus a bit that didn't fully work because of federalism (double jeopardy) and one in the eye for literalists (who must conclude that just compensation is not required if taking is for private use). http://www.amazon.com/s/?url=search-...uthor=landmark http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/?url=searc...uthor=landmark http://www.amazon.ca/s/?url=search-a...uthor=landmark |

New Wildside Press freebie is up:
The Evelyn E. Smith Science Fiction MINIPACK™ by the late Evelyn E. Smith (ISFDB, SYKM, Wikipedia), probably much better known for her later mystery novel series than her Golden Age sci-fi shorts. There weren’t a lot of women writing science fiction in the 1950s, but among those few, only a few names are still widely remembered: Leigh Brackett, Andre Norton, C.L. Moore. But what about Evelyn E. Smith? Smith (1922-2000) was not just a writer, but a crossword puzzle compiler. During the 1950s, she regularly published—under her real name—short stories and novelettes in magazines like Galaxy Science Fiction and Fantastic Universe. These range from post-apocalyptic satires, such as “The Last of the Spode” and “The Hardest Bargain,” to “BAXBR/DAXBR,” where she explores the dangers of Martian crossword puzzles. She also wrote four science fiction novels, which chiefly deal with questions of gender identity and, like all of her work, are characterized by their wit and humor. Today she is probably better known for writing the Miss Melville Mystery series, which chronicles the exploits of a middle-aged socialite-turned-assassin. (She also wrote several gothic romance novels under the pen name Delphine C. Lyons.) This MINIPACK™ is a sampler to whet your appetite as we work on the much longer volume, The Golden Age of Science Fiction MEGAPACK™, vol. 20: Evelyn E. Smith, which I hope to release later this week. Enjoy! Also, this week's Humble Game Making Bundle will give you as a sampler a full free DRM-free sci-fi alien adventure game, Mibibli's Quest*, (available for Mac, Linux, and Windows) and its soundtrack, in return for your email address (no purchase necessary, no need to sign up for the newsletter). * The game itself is regularly free via the creator's website, but the soundtrack is normally a requested $10 CAD donation add-on. New Wildside Press freebie for Tuesday:
The Bryce Walton Science Fiction Minipack by the late Bryce Walton (ISFDB, Wikipedia), a collection of his pulp sci-fi stories from the Golden Age. Who was Bryce Walton? Bryce was born in Blythedale, Missouri, the son of Paul Dean Walton and Golda Powers. He held various jobs starting in 1938 and attended Los Angeles Junior College 1939–41. During World War II, he served as a navy correspondent. In 1945, he began a career as a freelance writer. He attended California State College from 1946 to 1947, then married photographer Ruth Arschinov on January 1, 1954. He was credited as a writer for the TV serial Captain Video and His Video Rangers. In 1961, he won the Alfred Hitchcock Best Short Story award, then went on to write three episodes of the TV show Alfred Hitchcock Presents (two of his stories were adopted for the series, including “The Greatest Monster of Them All”). It was Ruth Walton who pointed out the similarities between Bryce and me. We were both born in Missouri, both wrote science fiction, both moved on to mysteries as we grew older. I am, therefore, doubly pleased to be able to share his talent with a new generation of readers—starting with this collection of his pulp science fiction stories. From two of us from the “Show Me” state—let us show you some classic science fiction. (Watch for collections of Bryce’s mystery stories coming later this year.) Enjoy! Also, a reminder that the following DRM-free bundles will be expiring in the next few days, if you haven't already decided whether or not you want to pick them up:
Also, for fans of Grant Morrison, Stan Lee, and/or tales based on Indian mythology, Humble Bundle are also presenting until next Wednesday the Tales from India featuring Grant Morrison and Stan Lee bundle of graphic novels, including works penned by Deepak Chopra (ISFDB, Wikipedia), who apparently is the same guy as the New Age guru whom you might know from his alternative self-help books. |

New Wildside Press freebie for Tuesday:
The Library Fuzz Minipack™, a mini-collection of vintage mystery shorts by the late James Holding, who wrote under a bunch of pseudonyms, including James Clarke Carlisle, Jr. and the Ellery Queen house name (Wikipedia), according to the biographical write-up on his Goodreads author profile. James Holding (1907-1997) was a prolific short story author in the mystery field. (He also wrote children’s books—including the Ellery Queen Jr. series—but short stories were his true domain.) Among the many series he created, the “Library Fuzz” stories, about a detective Hal Johnson who tracks down overdue library books (and often stumbles across crimes) is one of the most usual...and fun! This MINIPACK™ collects the first 5 “Library Fuzz” stories. If you enjoy them, you can also pick up The Library Fuzz MEGAPACK™, which includes 20 stories. Enjoy! Also, Humble Bundle's Tales from India featuring Grant Morrison & Stan Lee full of Indian-created & inspired comics has added a graphic novel series starring a paranormal PI in Mumbai, a disappearing family mystery/adventure thriller, and something involving dinosaurs vs. aliens which looks kind of cool to the better-than-average tier, if you're interested. Ends on Thursday at 11 AM Pacific Time. Last edited by ATDrake; 07-21-2015 at 02:42 PM. |
