If I Had Lunch with C. S. Lewis: Exploring the Ideas of C. S. Lewis on the Meaning of Life by Irish theologian Alister McGrath (Wikipedia) combines an introductory mini-biography (McGrath has also written a full-length biography of Lewis) to flesh out his discussion of the noted Narnia author's more theological themes and notions, based on an interpretation of the life experiences which shaped Lewis and thereby ended up in his writings in some form or other, free courtesy of Christian publisher Tyndale House.
Some of the more critical customer reviews note that at times, McGrath does seem to be pushing his own notions more by arguing support for them from Lewis' words rather than examining and extrapolating, but overall consider this to be an interesting look at Lewis' work as viewed through a theological lens. Currently free @ B&N (also in the UK), Amazon (available to Canadians; this does not seem to exist in a UK store edition), Kobo & iTunes (both available to Canadians), and Christian Book (ADE-DRM ePub available in selected countries). And this has been the selected 3rd (non-repeat) free ebook thread of the day. Because I don't often get to post quasi-academic critical commentary stuff that's related to fantasy authors whom I've read and enjoyed, even if it's mostly not about those works of theirs which I actually did read and enjoy (there is a Narnia portion in this, though). ![]() Enjoy! Description What if you could ask C. S. Lewis his thoughts on some of the most difficult questions of life? If you could, the result would be Dr. Alister McGrath’s provocative and perceptive book, If I Had Lunch with C. S. Lewis. Best-selling author, prominent academic, and sought-after speaker, Dr. McGrath sees C. S. Lewis as the perfect conversation companion for the persistent meaning-of-life questions everyone asks. What makes Lewis a good dialogue partner is that his mind traveled through a wide and varied terrain: from atheism of his early life to his conversion later in life; from his rational skepticism to his appreciation of value of human desires and imagination; from his role as a Christian apologist during World War II to his growth as a celebrated author of classic children’s literature. The questions Lewis pondered persist today: Does life have meaning? Does God exist? Can reason and imagination be reconciled? Why does God allow suffering? Let McGrath be your insightful guide to an intriguing conversation with Lewis about the ultimate questions. Last edited by ATDrake; 11-02-2014 at 05:19 AM. Reason: Actually not available worldwide. |

Now also free @ BookShout (online reading & in-app download), which seems to indicate from its listing that this is the last day.
