New Firmware Update - Likebook Mars - 03/14/20

V.2.3.0-2020031218

Approximately 640MB.

Not sure what changed but in the notes it read about an upgrade to Z-reader.

Sorry that's all I know for the moment. Upgrade went better than last time.

ZReader is their second ebook reader/parser engine, that honors more of an epubs (html based) formatting (as in all of it, even margins), than their default reader (which strips pretty much all formatting out, only keeps paragraphs and headers, moves first lines inwards, and allows you to reformat text layout from there).

ZReader also is the only one of the two that can handle soft hyphens. (Yay!)

With the update, there now is a toggle to set this reader engine as the global default. (Go to the library tab, click on the three lines (top right), and its the last option (Reader settings). This will apply to new books added only. Older books still have to be toggled by hand (in settings in the individual book) as far as I have seen. (Or at least their older toggle value (if set?) overrides the global setting (which is good).)

Also in ZReader its now possible to adjust top and bottom margin settings. those are the new additions I remember (and have found) from the update readme screen.

edit: Also ZReader has a new default font (serif) thats actually very good (times new roman style - but thinner). Try it.

The update went well, no problems here. Nice to see progress being made. I didn't notice the new reader font but for the first time I clicked on the cloud fonts option and they are not too bad either. I'm staying with the sideloaded Literata and Bookerly fonts though, they look the most legible and everyone should have them.

OTA Update Not Working

Nevermind... I tried it half-a-dozen times yesterday, and same issue. I tried it again this morning, and now it works fine. I tried to see how I could delete this post, but couldn't find it in the editing or user cp.

I have the Likebook Ares Note.

Checked for an update, but it says I'm already updated, which shows that I'm not. I'm still running xxxx16.

Anywhere I can get the latest update, in order to manually update?

I must say, support for all Likebook products, as far as I can tell, doesn't exist.

Thanks!

I figure this may improve everyone's corona lockdown experience so here goes

Bookerly and Literata fonts are Amazon and Google products, they are specialised fonts for readers with e-ink displays.

Blog post about the advantages of these two fonts

Download Literata and Bookerly fonts

Now to install them, connect your Android reader by USB to your PC. It should show up as a device in windows explorer or any other file manager.

Then you copy the unpacked font files to the "Fonts" directory in the reader main directory. If the Fonts directory doesn't exist you have to create it. It should probably also work with a Fonts directory on the SD-card.

Reboot the reader and the new fonts should be available to the Android system and in the reader settings!

Jinz:

Thank you for the lovely fonts. I will try them on my next non science fiction reading... since (strangely) I don't read sci-fi using serif fonts (why is that??).

Very gratefully yours,

Where can you change the font in the new reader? I can't find any setting that allows me to select which font to use, I tried looking everywhere for it.

Drop fonts into a folder named Fonts in the top most directory of the filesystem, like so:

Fonts can be in .ttf or .otf format.

Then you should find an option in advanced font settings in the reading application (click on the the dots (...) next to Font (System Default)).

Question Boyue Likebook Mars Reader and Sideloaded Fonts

But will they appear on Boyue Reader as individual fonts (<name>-<style>) or as font family (<name>)?

How do you get them to appear or be used as a font family on Boyue Reader?

Awaiting your kind reply,

Hey guys, when you have a book open, tap the middle of the screen to bring up the reader settings. It's the middle by default but this can also be adjusted.

However the typography options are in the lower right of the settings overlay, under the icon that looks like an "A"

Just for future reference (I think you've already found out ) currently they would be selected as individual fonts, and not as font families. The Font Family formating you see in the filebrowser screenshot was just the one you had to use on Kindles, so this is what I had at hand.

Currently the Likebook Mars doesnt seem to recognize or group font families (regular/italic/bold/bolditalic typesets of the same font). So you'd choose the the regular font and that would be the only one that would be used.
