Tor.com bows out of ebooks
I was wondering why they have been no new free ebooks from tor.com over the last few months and found a blog post explaining that they are too worried about piracy and pretty much can't be bothered producing ebooks

Did you really think a company would use terms like "alpha-geeks" and "chumps" in an official statement?
Thanks for the minor heart attack though. :-) |

And THIS sort of thing is (part of) why I hate April Fool's Day with a fiery burning passion that will never die: because the prank news stories it generates hang around and fool people who see them long after 4/1 into making alarmed posts about them.
Grr. |

The sign *should* say "Beware of the Leopard."

The inside joke part of the whole thing is that Tor is notorious for the fact that they *did* do ebooks, then *stopped* doing them because of piracy/DRM issues, and now they say they're going to get *back* to doing them Real Soon Now (tm).

Hmmm, I know how long the wait has been for Tor via webscriptions. On April 16, Toni said:
Still waiting for final paperwork.--Toni http://bar.baen.com/baen.TonisTable/...iptions%3f.htm Of course, given Tor's history that's really a non-answer. However, we can read that they are still working on it, and that it is in the last stage. I guess the real question is whether some senior executive will pull it again or let it go through. |

I was recently talking with Charles Stross, whose 5th (and most excellent, though ugly cliff-hanger) Merchant Princes novel was just published (but NOT in ebook). Apparently the problem isn't Tor but rather management in the corporate chain above Tor. Anything could happen but it likely won't be fast.

Aaaarggh, first time I have been stung by a stale April Fools joke
Must not partially read posts when I am tired and about to go to bed Still considering how Tor has treated ebooks so far it was a pretty plausible post. |
