Scribe - "An error occurred while downloading the update"

Is there a workaround to use a Scribe without an always on connection to Amazon?

Every few reboots, there is a "Loading, please wait" splash screen, which then goes to a warning "Something went wrong", "An error occurred while downloading the update."

Since this is modal at boot, it seems to be intended to FORCE enabling access for the Scribe and allow it to pull a large amount of data. There's no actual update (5.6.1.3 is sideloaded), so this seems to be the home-page marketing material, along side pushing information about every sideloaded book.

Would always booting in Airplane mode solve this?

If you plug the scribe into your computer, what files/folders do you see on the device?
