Difference between Rakuten and Walmart purchased Kobo

I bought the Clara HD from Walmart this past week, and was a little surprised to see Walmart branding on the device itself. There is a Walmart logo as the default screensaver, and Walmart login is the primary method.

Are there any other significant differences?

Would there be any strong reason for me to flash the non-Walmart image?

Honestly dealing with Walmart was rubbish. They said two day shipping but it ended up being four days.

They are the same and run the same firmware. The only difference is the name in the affiliate.conf file on the device (which can be edited with something like Notepad), which is what tells it to show the WalMart logo, or FNAC logo, etc.

Or, if you want no logo, change the affiliate to “kobo” or “beta”, for instance.

Dear Mrs_Often... thanks for this info a few days ago.. hated the Walmart logo. I tried the 'random screensaver' hack, but just can't get it working on the Clara HD. Would love to get it to work, but have spent too much time on it already.

I was wondering.. has anyone been able to create a 'custom affiliate' and thus their own sleep/power logos? Or does the affiliate config pull down graphics from a Kobo server? Thanks!

My "kobo" affiliate purchased Clara and H2O2 both show(ed) the current book as sleep/power screen

Newbie question: So if same (I too just got mine from Walmart), is there a reason it shows 'up to date' while running 4.10.11655? Am I waiting for Walmart to push the 4.12 firmware, or can I just load it myself? I'm not logging in with a Walmart account or ever going to use them to acquire eBooks.

You can load it yourself or you can change your affiliate. I'd avoid the beta affiliate though, unless that's really what you want. Even if they have just regular updates there now, you never know what will happen in future.

Kobo roll the firmware out on a schedule this uses the model of ereader, the affiliate and your location. They start with a few small affiliates and expand if there are no problems. In the past, it could take a month for the update to reach Australia. They seem to be rolling them out quicker now, but, it has only been four days since the release, so they are still only doing the initial affiliates.

I know there are two patches to avoid unwanted firmware update, but: what happens if I change my affiliate in something that doesn't exist (for example: "nobody")? In the end Kobo will be updated anyway or not?
It's a curiosity but somebody could use that simply trick to retard updates in order to wait for patches are ready or any other reason.

I answer myself: this trick works: I am avoiding firmware updating. When I will have time to apply patches and reinstall Koreader I will write again "Kobo" in the affiliate.conf file
