Do not get me wrong: using matte screens is a basic requirement and the difficulties that exist in order to finalize purchased devices to make them ready for use is shocking.

To equip your devices with a matte film, it seems to me currently that you should look for technicians' shops (mobile devices repairs etc.) that equipped themselves with plotters and professional grade matte films. Those films that can be moved for some time after being placed on the glass - those not immediately adhesive - are those I am calling "professional grade".
See here my latest rants and headaches on the matter.
Thanks for the insight. I will look into the latter possibility although I would be positively surprierd if local phone stores provided such a service.

On the issue of scratches, I still own a Yotaphone 2 with a matte EPD and it has very little scratches despite not always having enjoyed a gentle treatment

I guess that would depend on how you use your phone.

It is my main phone, but I'm not your typical phone user. I send and receive several texts a year. Can't even remember the last time I used a mobile phone to make or receive a call. I also have disabled data on the phone so that I can only access the internet via wifi... I use it mainly for reading, taking photos and listening to music, but I have the option of using it as a phone should the need arise.

However, I have read that some people who are likely more typical users than myself are using it is as their main phone.

One thing to note, if you live in a northerly country, is that some people have reported issues in extremely cold weather when using it outside.

I only used mine briefly a couple of times to take pictures during winter here in Canada. Although the phone took the pictures without incident, I did notice that the lockscreen image looked a little wonky. Everything returned to normal once I was inside again. However, it made me wonder how images would render if using the device for an extended period in the cold.

I have an A5 and really love it.But it would be tempting to get the A5CC if the reading experience were just as good.

Also, do you notice any difference in terms of power consumption between the two devices?

And can the lockscreen display a colour picture when the device is switched off?

Thanks.
Because the A5CC has colour filters in front of the e-ink screen, it is less reflective than the A5. Black on white text, there seems to be little difference. Colour is overlayed over the e-ink screen, with a colour filter array, so it doesn't seem to interfere with text display. Power consumption seems pretty much the same between the two. Increasing with, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth & screen refresh rate, when browsing the internet etc. The lock screen has a user selectable background. If there is a way to display a picture when shutdown, I haven't found it. Shutdown display, is minimal, just says Hisense & Turned off. In lock screen, you can display whatever background picture you like. The Hisense A5CC phone, with it's extra memory and faster processor, gives a much better user experience, than the Hisense A5...

To find a repairs shop owned by first class electronics enthusiast, which also thought it was a good idea (understatement) to have a plotter, shapes database and matte film, is what happened to me - days after my usual resellers revealed having started selling s**t instead of the excellence they sold before.

I do not know what your local reality is - you have to look for the right ones. Unless you are in the Gobi, I would be surprised if you cannot find anything.

Just a quick note. 2 months ago, Goodereader wrote in an article that Hisense is looking at the possibility of an update that would grant all of their phones that run on Android 9.0 and up Google play functionality but it would take "6 months of testing".

Crossing my fingers I guess.

Would you decide to take a few pictures, as I dared asking at post #99 in this thead, maybe it would be nice to see the difference between the four "Clear", "Balanced", "Smooth" and "Speed" display modes.

To see the results in "Clear", supposing it is the best quality mode (like Greyscale Update in usual E-Ink waveforms), is the most important.

And they should get a camera with more definition and a good stabilizer.

Still about "Clear" vs "Balanced" vs "Smooth" vs "Speed", I took some pictures out of a video of theirs, at maximum resolution. I compared "Clear" and "Balanced" as the difference was already visible at that video quality. But the quality of the video shots is not good enough, very blurry, "ink-jet" - reliable like evaluating a photo from its printout on an old household inkjet. So the attached picture has little real value.

(And why do they call "ghosting" "staining"? When has this latter become part of the jargon?)

This is instead a satisfyingly clear picture (from a YT video from 红酒汤姆一世) of how the displayed content looks like.
Since the colour-tinted areas are very evident, the picture shows well how the 300-ish DPI E-Ink layer somoothly "subpixels" the 100-ish DPI filter.
But it does not yet answer those basic old question - how does text in colour look, at what resolution are images rendered, how do PDF renderings look etc.

EDIT:
<not that serious>
...and why not adding 红酒汤姆一世, for those who have no idea like I did not just an hour ago.
There the guy is, on the right. Just do not expect the real kaleido to have that contrast boost I added...

It's my post that made the news. Kinda funny. Thing is a company that sells Hisense phones might (!) sell them with Google Play in six months. Might. And the reseller is vague on whether existing customers would get such an update, because telling the truth they'd have to say a loud and clear no. No updates for existing customers.

Thank you!
First of all: I am in mobility now and I cannot assess quietly, but: I do not seem to notice a degradation in resolution in the presence of colour. The renderer to me (at this phase) looks smart enough. A reduction to 100-ish DPI should be very noticeable!

EDIT: I would say for example that some strings in colour (e.g. the white on dark cyan "Sign in" in one of the pictures) look more jagged than black ones, but I would not say there is such a 9x degradation out of a resolution loss... (The lower part of the pictures is just the upper contrasted).

Hi,

I wondered if you might know whether the setup that NHS doctors use for video calls with their patients works on the HiSense A5C or other e-ink phones?

I am thinking about buying one but I don't know whether the NHS setup requires google play store.

Thanks!
