Overdrive book only available as browser read
I checked out a library book yesterday and then discovered it was only available as an "overdrive" loan and could only be read in the browser. (Or possibly also on my phone, I didn't think to check before I returned it.) On twitter, a few confirmed that this has happened to them.
Anyone know anything about this? I can really only read comfortably with e-ink, so I'm concerned it's some horrible new direction Overdrive is taking. |

Can you share any information about the book?

I run into this occasionally when borrowing from my library, and use the Overdrive app on my iPad mini when it happens. It's when the book isn't available in Kindle format, just ePub.

I’ve long since moved to using Libby instead of Overdrive.

Looks like the library can loan out both versions at the same time! Would be nicer if the checked out version can lead one to a wait list. |

I saw that once, but it was for a layout-heavy book that likely would've looked weird as an ePub anyways.
Semi-related, but Open Library's mostly moved to 1-hour loans, which can only be read in browser. No more downloads for sideloading. The 14-day loan is now only available if they have multiple copies of the exact same edition, which is annoyingly arbitrary. I suspect it's related to the lawsuit from the publishers. I have never seen an eBook from Overdrive have three separate versions. If an eBook has ePub, Kindle, and Overdrive Read, that's one copy. You can check it out in ePub or Kindle and still are able to read it online. But once you check it out in ePub or Kindle, that's it for the offline format. You cannot choose Kindle and change your mind and download the ePub without first returning it.

I was surprised my library had more Kindle books than ePubs now. The other libraries I've used were the opposite. (I think this one was also, until recently.)

I had this happen to me, and it's one of the big reasons I switched to Kobo.
However, if the book isn't available in the Kobo store I can't download it automatically to the e-reader from the library. This happens with magazines and some books. |

This is the book record on overdrive: https://www.overdrive.com/media/1632082/under-her-skin It doesn't have the formats on that page, but it does on my library page. |

Deleted. I stated the obvious ... redundant.
