Arc Manor/Phoenix Pick Free ebook

Quote:
Our specials of the month are from L. Neil Smith. His Prometheus award winning novel Pallas is available on a pay what you want basis (including absolutely free) on the Publisher's Pick web site.

www.PublishersPick.com

As usual we have a number of other deals from same author, including one for nine ebooks at an incredible price. If you like science fiction action and adventure, this collection should really help you manage your time in the coming weeks.

This has been given away previously, so you might want to check to see if you have it before grabbing it.

Arc Manor / Phoenix Pick free ebook

The current free ebook is Bolo: The Annals of the Dinochrome Brigade by Keith Laumer.

Check it out at Publisher's Pick: Free eBook of the Month

The sequel Rogue Bolo is also on sale.

Quote:
Keith Laumer is on one of the forgotten heroes of science fiction. He was one of the early pioneers of military science fiction leveraging his experience as an officer in the United States Air Force.

The Bolo series which chronicles the rise of intelligent, self-aware fighting machines is still considered by many to be a prime example of great military science fiction, dealing with issues that still remain relevant today, nearly two decades after the author's death.

Phoenix Pick is proud to be republishing some of his works, and give all our readers the opportunity to experience this classic for free this month. Our ebook of the month is Laumer's Bolo: The Annals of the Dinochrome Brigade. This is the first book in the series, and a must-read for fans of science fiction.

The free book for June, 2020 is Radix by A. A. Attanasio. I would suggest downloading the .mobi version and converting it to epub. The epub is a total abomination.

Check it out at Publisher's Pick: Free eBook of the Month.

Quote:
NEBULA AWARD NOMINEE

A young man's odyssey of self discovery in a world eerily alien, yet hauntingly familiar.

Set thirteen centuries in the future, A. A. Attanasio meticulously creates a brilliantly realized Earth, rich in detail and filled with beings brought to life with intense energy.

In this strange and beautiful world, Sumner Kagan will change from an adolescent outcast to a warrior with god-like powers and in the process take us on an epic and transcendent journey.

I have to say I slogged through that a couple years ago when it was part of a bundle, i believe before publisher's pick was a thing, and I... wasn't a fan.

The free book for July, 2020 is Time for the Stars by Robert A. Heinlein.

Check it out at Publisher's Pick: Free eBook of the Month.

Quote:
With over-population stretching the resources of Earth, the need to find and colonize other Terra-type planets is becoming crucial to the survival of the human race. But finding these planets is time-consuming and very costly.

Spoiler:

With a seemingly inexhaustible budget, the scientists at the Long Range Foundation create the remarkable Torchships, which are able to traverse to different Star Systems within the matter of months. However, communication between Earth and these ships would still take countless years—even decades. How would they alert Earth of the planets they find?

Tom and Pat are recruited by LRF to become the human transmitters and receivers for the mission. Growing up together they had felt like they were so similar, so in sync, that it was almost as if they read each other’s minds…. Only to discover, that was indeed what they could do. Along with other telepathic pairings, their abilities are tested, and it is discovered that time nor distance impedes their connection; communication between Earth and the Torchships would be instantaneous.

But there is a catch: during the course of the mission, while one of them stays behind and grow old, on Earth, the other will be able traversing the stars, and—if he survives—will return a young man still.

They do have a Heinlein bundle for minimum acceptable price $14.99.

Also a super Heinlein bundle for minimum acceptable price $24.99.

The epub was created in InDesign and cleaned up in Sigil. It's a miracle given some of the crap they've churned out in past.

The free book for October, 2020--that was the title of the email but I think they mean November--is Oath of Fealty by Jerry Pournelle and Larry Niven.

Check it out at Publisher's Pick: Free eBook of the Month.

Spoiler:
Quote:
“RareStorytelling…demands to be read at one sitting.” – Chicago Sun-Times

“Nobody does it better than Niven and Pournelle.” —Tom Clancy

“Exciting, swift and suspenseful.” – Theodore Sturgeon

In a dystopian future, where pollution and violence overrun Los Angeles streets, a Utopia flourishes. Todos Santos is thousand-foot-high arcology; a single-structured city that rises above the festering skyscrapers to offer its privileged residents the perfect blend of technology and security in exchange for their oath of allegiance and vigilance.

But is this orderly city elevating humanity, or shackling it? There are those who feel the constant video surveillance oppressive, rather than inclusive, or that the city is monopolizing hard-earned resources, and taking money away from the poorer Angelinos.

Connected through neural implants to MILLIE – the AI that runs all of Todos Santos’ systems – Art Bonner and Barbara Churchwood work with a team of dedicated staff to protect the city against the FROMATEs ("Friends of Man and the Earth”), who are a group of anti-technology zealots dedicated to destroying everything they have built. When three youths break into the city, to see if they can exploit its weaknesses, the repercussions of their actions threaten to bring one of humanities most ambitious projects to its knees....

Yep. And the cover they have is disgusting. It's like Photoshop threw up.

As for how bad it is, It was made with InDesign 11.3 and from there, edited with Sigil 0.8.901. Whoever made this should be fired. Here's the CSS and all it's glory.

You think the CSS is bad, the Mobi code is even worse. So yes, all versions are really bad. It's too good a book to allow such a company to have it.

This month's ebook is Soulmates a collection by Lezli Robyn and Mike Resnick.

https://www.publisherspick.com/

Quote:
Soulmates is a collaboration by Mike Resnick and Lezli Robyn. I had been reading and enjoying novels by award-winning author Mike Resnick for some time now. Lezli Robyn was new to me. All but two of the stories were collaborations. "Anne-Droid" of Green Gables (my favorite by far) was by Ms. Robyn alone. "Hunting the Snark" (yes, Lewis Carroll in space) was by Mike Resnick alone.

All of the stories in this collection are about "companionship" and are largely light-hearted. Sometimes I don't read enough humorous science fiction. Some of the stories, however, are heart-wrenching.

These stories are also universal. In fact, quite a few have been translated into other languages and either have been nominated for or won literary prizes in other countries.

In short, this Soulmates short story collection is a special treat not to be missed!!"

Now to wait for the obligatory post from Jon complaining about the formatting and the CSS.
