Possible EU pricing
http://www.crunchgear.com/2010/05/04...uro-in-france/
Fairly pricey, albeit a fair amount of the markup is accounted by taxes so it isn't quite as bad as a $ = € conversion would seem. |

Another way of looking at it is to see how the iPad is priced compared to, say, an entry-level MacBook Pro. In the U.S. the MBP is $1199, the 16Gb iPad $499, or a little under 42% of the price. In France the MBP is €1149; apply the same percentage and you get €479 for the iPad, so not a million miles away.
Prices here in the UK are £999 for the MBP, so applying the same logic suggests an iPad price of £416; I'd be happy if that translated to £399 for convenience, but wouldn't be surprised if it was £449 <shrug> Fingers crossed, we'll find out soon enough... Cheers, Pete |

You need to do a currency conversion. The Euro right now is worth about $128.00 US that would make a EuroZone purchase of a 16GB WiFi only iPad about $389.00.

Companies make a 1-1 conversion in Europe. It seems the standard practice, and it comes to ridiculous degrees in Spain. The Alex, which has been criticised for selling at a price point of 400 USD, is going to sell in Spain for 450 Euro.

UK prices announced today
OK, weird quoting myself but...
Quote:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology...cing-announced "Apple's price for the 16GB version of the Wi-Fi only iPad is £429 (including VAT) while the 32GB version is £499 and 64GB is £599..." So using the "percentage of Macbook Pro price" multiplier, they've 'rounded up' the 16Gb's £416 to a ticket-friendly £429, the 64Gb's £583 to £599, and the 32Gb stays pretty much bang on £499. I can live with that Pete |

Handily for apple the currently weak exchange rate makes the pricing seems more reasonable.

Convert to GBP: £465 Add VAT@17.5%: £546 Actual UK price: £599 So the markup isn't actually too bad. |

Seriously after the big success i would say they already would like to raise the prices in the US but that would bring them very angry costumers. So the one last option they ket themself open from the begining was to release international prices as late as possible to be in the position to determinate how much they can leech of their costumers. But hey thats how succesfull companies should act like, not? If you don't like it don't buy it, save your money and buy apple stocks (i am very pleased with both, iPad and their stocks ) |

Um, because you have to pay it?
If you walk into an Apple store in the US, the prices exclude tax, and it will be added at the counter. In the UK the price includes tax. Legally in the US you have to declare and pay sales tax on internet purchases, even if most people don't. |

Very smart but that is not how it works if you are a company exporting goods from the USA into the EU. You can add the VAT thats correct but you don't have to add US residential tax

But it is relevant to the price that the end user pays. The fact that prices are quoting in the US exclusive of sales tax, but in the EU inclusive of VAT, makes a big different to the "apparent" price.

right.. and the problem is the US doesn't have a flat tax, each state has a different amount with some states not charging sales tax at all. the apple on-line store charges sales tax based on where your billing address i believe. they can't really advertise variable prices for each state.

But that is not relevant to the point Steve makes in his email (if we believe its his email)
