If they add PDF annotation just by adding another layer to the PDF with image based input, then simply copying the annotated PDF to ANYTHING will work.

That should be workable, and hopefully will be implemented --- it would be great if the annotations were done so as to match how Acrobat and other apps handle them, so that we could export them so as to use other tools on them as well

I kinda doubt the PDF annotations will round trip with Acrobat, but we'll have to wait and see.

If you go back to the earlier interview with Kevin Keith (http://thekindlechronicles.com/tkc-698-kevin-keith), he talked about how they were using them in their meeting workflows, marking up Word docs and so forth. They seem more focussed on integration with Word.

I'm actually a little surprised Word is even part of their business process. At least where I was working (prior to recent retirement), we'd moved on to collaborative web documentation, specifically Confluence and later, Quip. Never saw a PDF or Word document in my five years there, or 3 years at previous job.

You can't properly annotate Word, or an ebook, with a stylus unless there is real time handwriting conversion/recognition. Otherwise you've only a vector or image of a "scribble".

From the product page:

Quote:
Make notes inyour documents
Easily import and mark-up PDF files or insert sticky notes on Microsoft Word documents and other compatible formats. Send them to your Kindle Scribe through your desktop web browser or via the Kindle app using the “Share” button on your iOS or Android device. Coming early 2023, you will also be able to send documents to Kindle Scribe directly through Microsoft Word.

There is no mention of native support for Microsoft Word format. But the photo purportedly shows someone marking one up.

Amazon has always claimed Word compatibility, but what they meant was conversion to a Kindle format when you use their tools /"send to Kindle" or whatever.

I just noticed that the latest version of the Kindle for Android app (8.69) now has a "Notebooks" choice under the "MORE" tab. When selected it shows the message "You don't have any notebooks. Create notebooks using a Kindle Scribe."

Yes, I see this in the iOS version as well. Thank you.

This seems different. I agree it is not at all clear how it all works.

Amazon has some new help pages up that provide some information about the annotation capabilities of the Kindle Scribe.

in Fix Issues with Personal Documents for Kindle it states:

Quote:
Are you unable to insert sticky notes, create on-page markups in your documents in the Kindle library, or are you receiving conversion fail errors?
  • Try sending the document again through Send to Kindle to make sure it has the latest features enabled for Kindle Scribe and Send to Kindle.
  • Delete ink drawings from your .doc or .docx document. Ink drawings will cause the document conversion to fail.
  • Turn off "Track changes" for your document in the Word app before sending it to your Kindle library.
  • Word comments are converted into Kindle footnotes with a gray background by design.
Note: Some documents may convert differently if they contain elements that are currently unsupported causing writing or sticky note insert not to work on Kindle Scribe.
From that it seems clear that Word documents will continue to be converted to Amazon formats rather than being annotated in their native form.

I am curious why certain unsupported elements will block the ability to create sticky notes.

---

Under Kindle Personal Document File Types That Support Notes it states:

Quote:
Note: Kindle Scribe doesn't support handwriting features in EPUB comics, Manga, and children’s books at this time.
So those fixed-layout graphical formats cannot be annotated.

That page also has a table laying out the annotation capabilities supported by Kindle apps and devices across file formats. According to that chart the only place where on-page markup is supported is using a Scribe with PDF (original layout). Scribe Handwritten sticky notes are listed as supported in the same formats that text annotations and highlights are currently allowed on other Kindles.

Nice find.

So it seems there's some 'enhancement' of conversion of Word documents specifically. It's still not clear to me what you're supposed to do with your marked up document, apart from opening the original Word document and going through it with the marked up document visually on your Scribe or iPad or whatever. Or will they somehow have a way to import your scribbles as 'ink drawings'?

"...at this time." Presumably they'll figure out a way to annotate them in the future. It should not be that hard to overlay the scribble and preserve the position and scale it appropriately. It might be nice even for other Kindle apps and devices if you could create text annotations on a per page (or per panel?) basis. All that you can do now is Bookmark.

So my conclusion is that for reading or proofing PDFs it's better than an Elipsa purely for 300 dpi vs 227 dpi. In all other respects poorer than Elipsa.

It's better than a reMarkable due to:
1. 300 dpi vs 227 dpi.
2. File transfer is one at a time on reMarkable via network
3. Handles ebooks same as any Kindle, the reMarkable natively only has sketches & PDFs.

But the Notebooks sound like the reMarkable Notebooks, which are just sketch pads. No native conversion to text.

On iOS (6.69.1), it's the same.

It's annoying that you cannot annotate PDF with the Kindle apps, but you can on Kindles themselves. Arguably the former are more suited to the task, and do so for Print Replica.

Is there a calibre plugin to generate Print Replica? Kindle Create will create a .KPF for publishing to KDP, but apparently not a file that you can side load to a device to test (I tried side loading KPF but Kindle app (iOS) doesn't do anything with it).

[I'm curious if Scribe will ever support Print Replica and if so if that will make it easier to download and dedrm them. I'm thus far too lazy to set up specific environment to handle the maybe 4 PR books I have purchased.]

PR are really just a proprietary PDF with Amazon DRM. They ought to add it to Scribe, but it seems like the reading aspect of Scribe is based on Kindle eink, a sort of 10.2″ version of Oasis.
