layout questions
Hello,
Thanks to this forum I have discovered the books written in Word have to be converted into HTML (filtered) before converting into other formats. Within Word I have each chapter starting on a new page, but when converted to HTML is just leaves various blank spaces. Should I remove all these spaces and just leave one space between chapters, like paragraphs I ask as I am now concerned that when converting from HTML into ePub or Mobi the page format will change from the original Word layout. Or is it best just to leave a blank space; or two, between chapters and have done with it Thanks in advance, Morrile |

Morrile, you might look at the Writer2Epub plugin for Open Office if you are converting MS Word files,
Simply open the DOC file in Open Office (did I mention it is FREE) and use the writer 2EPUB button on the toolbar. Presto, a EPUB without the MS cruft |

Delete all the blank space, then insert a page-break marker.

It doesn't really matter whether you add blank lines or not. The main thing to give yourself an easy life when using Word to create HTML (filtered) to import to calibre is that you use the Word built-in styles 'Heading 1', and/or 'Heading 2', and/or ... 'Heading 6' to style your chapter headings.
The created HTML will then contain <h1> and/or <h2> ... <h6> tags around your Chapter headings. It is then very straightforward to tell calibre to use these heading tags to detect new chapters and to make sure each chapter starts on a new page. If you need more details feel free to ask.
