Hm. Only read The City & The City, The Windup Girl, and Palimpsest from that list.

I thought The Waters of Mars was one of the very worst episodes of the New Who.

I'm pleased about "Bridesicle". That was definitely one of my favourites of the year in Asimov's.

Good winners this year. I read the books and stories last spring, and it was a good field of nominees this year. Congrats to the winners!

So do I.

Phil is a long time SF fan, attends SF conventions, and has been a GoH at several. This is a repeat for him: the previous Girl Genius collection won the Best Graphic Novel award last year.

Tor books has a graphic novel line in the works, and an omnibus of the first three Girl Genius collections will be the lead title.

Interesting. The first one (The City & The City) is available at under $10 at Kobobooks and Amazon as an e-book in Canada ... the second winner (The Windup Girl) is not available as an ebook from either source for any price.

So ... I hear about the prestigious 2010 Hugo ward Winner ... which one will I buy?

Windup Girl is available DRM-free via Baen's Webscriptions for $6. Less if you buy the Nightshade [insert month I've forgotten here] bundle.

The City & The City is the better-written, somewhat less bleakly depressing and exploitative foreign-culture-appropriating story, however.

You are probably right about additional sales, but The Windup Girl is available as a DRM free ebook from WebScriptions for $6.

Thanks, ATDrake, Wallcraft and ardeegee ... I now know I can get the tie choice at Baen ... but you've also under-scored my point: the Hugos -- outside of the Nebulas the most prestigious awards for sci-fi -- ought to be a huge driver of sales in e-books and p-books. But if leading e-book vendors don't have them ... what's the value in winning the award?

Preaching to the converted is not enough
: the sci-fi folk who closely follow every ripple in thw cosmic time-space fabric ... sure, they are watching Baen. But winning a Hugo is about breaking out of the niche into the mainstream ... and if the product isn't available where consumers are ... sorry, what was the point of the award again? Prestige is nice, but it doesn't pay the rent ... it's about recognition and sales ... and NOT in that order.

Neither of those winners has a chance of making it "in the mainstream." They aren't nearly dumb enough.

When was the last time even award-winning sf/fantasy managed to crawl out of the sci-fi ghetto and into the mainstream consciousness anyway?

Looking at the Hugo and Locus winners up on Wikipedia, I could really only argue for Stranger in a Strange Land for 60s counter-culture, The Moon is a Harsh Mistress for libertarians, The Mists of Avalon for New Age/Celtic/Pagan revival types, but those are closer to fringe groups, really.

The causality for Harry Potter goes the other way, and Fahrenheit 451, which is the only one I'd think that practically everybody today knows the basic idea of, is actually a retro-Hugo, awarded after they realized its cultural impact.

Maybe Dune and Starship Troopers because of the movies/tv. People at least know what the stuff in those books look like, even if they may not really know what they're about.

And The Handmaid's Tale, because that tends to get used in Canadian Literature and Women's Studies classes.

The majority of the market still buys the paper edition. Not having it available as an ebook is a nuisance for the author, not a disaster. This is likely to change, but at the moment, the folks it really bites are those who only want ebook editions.

The Hugos are a driver, though it's not clear they're a huge one, and along with the Nebulas are the only SF awards that have that sort of popular recognition and drive sales. There are a plethora of other SF/fantasy awards, but none I can think of actually boost sales of the books that get them.
