Cool FBReader 0.10.7 for DR800

This package is now (2010/12/11) obsolete, use the new port at https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho....php?p=1265744

EDIT 20100906: new release: v5

See below the changes.

IMPORTANT: version 4 and up needs the core base package in https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?p=887725

Hi,

FBReader 0.10.7 for iRex DR800S

This is a compilation of FBReader e-book reader for iRex DR800 and DR1000.
There aren't much things changed from the original sources, a customized toolbar, some new icons and configuration and data is saved in "SD card/Programs/_config/.FBReader".
Since v4 it includes Loo and Viacheslav script to associate file extensions.

Random notes:
- This package is based on version 0.10.7
- I've tried 0.12.7 but it was too slow, this version is really fast
- Don't know if it works on DR800SG, but I expect it should do

Steps to install:
1. enable SD card folders browsing
2. connect device to your computer using the USB cable
3. create a folder "/Programs" in SD card root
4. you need libs core package installed into SD card/Programs/_base installed
5. copy the contents of this compressed file there.
You should have something like:
Code:
       SD card
           /Programs
               _base (directory)
               _config (directory)
               _fbreader (directory)
               Install (directory)
               FBReader.desktop (file)
6. go to SD_card/Install folder and run FBReaderAddExt to associate extensions with this program

Steps to use:
1. Navigate to SD card -> Select Programs folder -> tap on FBReader icon
2. Click on preferences and change some settings as default configuration
is not suitable for e-readers. F.e. I've changed:
- margins to 10, 10, 0, 4
- font size (in "styles" tab): to 8
- indicator: I like the "old style"
- key bindings. Tip: click on "Action for key" and press the bar to
show available actions
3. Take a look at "_fbreader/share/FBReader/default/toolbar.xml" file
if you want to change the buttons/actions shown in the toolbar

Enjoy,
Iņigo Serna

Changes:
Code:
v5 - 2010/09/06 00:57
. updated share/zlibrary/hyphenationPatterns.zip. This should fix
the Russian hyphenation problems. Thanks to Loo
. associate .prc and .mobi file extensions with FBReader
. toolbar slightly modified to fit better with DR800+
. move add/remove extensions shortcuts to Install folder

v4 - 2010/04/27 23:07
. needs libs from core _base package v1: fribidi, liblinebreak, libbz2
. included Loo and Viacheslav file extensions association script

v3 - 2010/04/16 23:40
. needs libs from core _base package v0: fribidi, liblinebreak, libbz2
. configuration is saved into /media/mmcblk0p1/Programs/_config/.FBReader
  instead of using /home/root/.FBReader

v1, v2
. customize toolbar and add new icons

v0 - 2010/03/24
. based on FBReader 0.10.7
. initial release

Thanks for this, Inigo. One question for you - can you flip the book 180 degrees within FBReader (on the DR800 itself)? I know that option is available on the PC version, just wondering if it is available on the DR800.

Thanks.

I am not familiar with FBreader although I did just read up on it briefly from the website. I have a few questions:

1. Does FBreader replace entirely the OS of the Irex?
2. If it replaces the Irex OS can I go back to the original OS if I am unhappy with FBreader?
3. What functionality does this add that the Irex does not have or won't have after the promised April patch?
4. Does FBreader have enough useful features to warrant making the change?
5. Any opinions from those that are using it on the Irex now?

Thank you in advance for the answers.

Yes, you can rotate 90, 180 or 270 degrees.

Yay!

Except that I've tried this on my 800SG, and when I click on FBReader, I get a "please wait" that ends quickly and then nothing. How can I help debug this?

1, 2. It doesn't replace the DR800 OS, it's just one application.
And in fact there is no integration with the device by now.
That means you need to run the app and load the documents, there is no integration with the content viewer of the OS.

3. Support for other formats: mobi and chm for me. Consult the complete list in http://www.fbreader.org/docs/formats.php

4. It depends on your use case.
You could use something like calibre to convert from mobi to epub format and use the normal viewer of the DR800, but it doesn't work for chm files.

5. I need it to read chm files ;-)
It's somewhat unstable when opening various big files at the same time (i.e., it looks device runs out of memory and you have to reboot it), but apart of it, opening one file by one is ok.

Anyway, the installation is not difficult and it offers you support for more type of documents.

Any way to put the icon for FBReader on desktop itself?

I got an error when trying this on DR800SG.

The 'FBReader" application cannot be opened.
Possibly the application is already open. Close it first and try agian.

I followed the install instruction from a Windows machine.

I am wondering whether I did something wrong during the install.

Not working for me either, I get a brief "please wait" dialog and nothing further happens.

let me check what I packaged... looks correct.
they are the very same files than on my DR800S, and here it works.

Please do the following:

1. connect the device to your computer
2. edit Programs/_fbreader/bin/fbreader.sh deleting the # char in the second line
this will generate a log file
3. disconnect USB and run again the program
4. post Programs/fbreader-log.txt file contents here

Thanks

Inigo,

I know CoolDragon also installed it successfully and His device is dr800S. It seems all the dr800SG can not install FBReader.

thanks

FBReader 10.2 that was posted a while ago works fine on my DR800SG, but not 10.7 from this thread.

could anyone with a DR800SG do the test in #11 and post the logs here, please?

It works with the emulator, so maybe the problem is other than differences between S vs. SG models.

Here's the contents of the log file:
/media/mmcblk0p1/Programs/_fbreader/bin/FBReader: error while loading shared libraries: libcurl.so.5: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
