It would be nice if a rich donor could give a large donation to the foundation in exchange for them allowing free distribution of the book.

I imagine the foundation hasn't really considered that they are hindering the distribution of the text. I'd bet that one of the reasons they were founded was to promote exactly that, but in pre-internet days protecting your copyright simply prevented other people from cashing in rather than limiting distribution since p-book pirates would have to sell the book (just like you).

On the other hand, the foundation does good work in education and in legal fights against various holocaust deniers, so I can't begrudge money heading in their direction - its just a shame that it comes at the price of limiting an important work's audience a bit.

Is there even any ebook version of Anne Frank: Diary of a Young Girl out there? I haven't been able to find one, but maybe I'm looking in all the wrong places.

No. It's not available. Pirated versions might be available somewhere but nothing legal.

That is easy to check using google and just search for "anne frank diary pdf"

Barbara will turn 93 in March. She is alive and well, living in Holland. Barbara is still very active and still able to travel and make presentations. In fact we had dinner together tonight!

Sadly, just searching by Anne Frank also brought up a free ebook claiming Anne Frank's diary is a fake.

I hope nobody will mind paying a modest sum for the right to read such an extraordinary piece of history.

Remember, by going "Dark" for it , you deprive a charitable organisation of vital funds.

And a "rich donor" would not provide continuing income, just a one-off hit - unless a "rich donor" could undertake to maintain the income , of course....

This thread is originally from January 2009 - 3 years ago. Obviously there have been a lot of ebooks released since then.

I read it over the Christmas holidays (i.e. it wasn't available 2 1/2 years ago, but is now).

BTW, it was really good. She was an incredibly good writer -- especially when you consider she started her diary just after her 13th birthday. I easily identified with her and remembered back to what life was like when I was a teenager (nothing to do with war or genocide but just normal life as a teen). At that age I was able to reason and use logic better than most adults, but I was still treated like a kid and I remember hating it. It appears like Anne Frank was in the same boat. She is easily the type of girl that you want to know and to make your friend. It was incredibly sad reading it when you knew what was coming, but a great book nonetheless.

Maybe if/when the dutch version falls into the PD, a community will translate it to various languages and release those into PD or c.c.
