I've been surprised by sex scenes before! And admittedly I much prefer where the couple just goes into the bedroom at the end of the scene - you know what is going to happen but you can imagine as much or as little as you like. I don't read Greg Iles for this reason. I was listening to one of his books on audio and all of a sudden the two main characters start getting it on (and in some detail). I was driving and just stuck listening to most of it. Since it was a mystery I didn't really expect that - I try to vet my stories a little better now

Same here!

I especially dislike them on tv or movies. You can tell a lot of times they're just thrown in for those who really aren't in it for the story, but for titilation. If you took them out, or had them behind closed doors, it wouldn't have mattered to the plot line.

And in books, I usually find them pretty boring. Especially if they're happening every-so-many pages, and they feel like filler.

I'm much more interested in the 'right before' and 'just after' than the actual act.

There exist books with over one hundred chapters. When they are formatted as ebooks, plenty can go wrong. On Harry Harrison's public domain books, some content creator creators publish the first sentence(s) of each chapter as the title of the chapter. Absolutely insane! This is force feeding spoilers into the table of contents before you even get to the actual story. In other cases, the titles given by the original author can also be spoilers. Therefore, it is best to scan past everything and head for the prologue (if any). I tend to skip that too, if I am aware of how much information will be unleashed by the author. The new "Jack Reacher - style" character (Peter Ash) created by Nick Petrie has resulted in seven books, so far. The Drifter is the first book in the series, and since it was my first exposure to the character, I did read the prologue. But, I probably shouldn't have done this. It is sometimes better to not know the background of a character, or prior history.

I skip to the end when I'm going to abandon a book. I will also skip extensive sex or violence as it is rarely relevant to the story. I gave up on romance books about 6 years ago because it's mostly mommie-porn. I gravitated to cozies.

A family member had this problem for a few years so stopped reading. It may have something to do with anxiety. Her life had been in some upheaval for 5 years. Take a break. If you like the story, get up, go for a walk, do something, then sit back down and read. I totally understand skipping if you are bored with the story, but you clearly had the patience in the past to read a good story all the way through, so you need a new skill to help you get back to that. BTW, family member is back to reading this year. She is reading shorter books, but she expects by the end of winter to be back to regular length novels.

Another thing I skip - recipes
I'm not much of a cook. I'm sure not motivated to try making something from a recipe included in a cozy mystery.

Yeah, it was done best the first time, but hair of bat and wool of dog are not an easy sell in this vegan-friendly world

LOL what are you reading? Shakespearean cozies?

I usually see recipes for things like "Grandma's pot roast" or "Susie's Apple Pie"

Yep that was my point, the Bard did it first, no one else should bother.

Well I do have a relative who has a dog with a very thick coat of hair, but I don't have a good source for the bat

I'd skip the recipes too, but I don't think I've seen any in the books I've read. Cozies aren't my cup of tea, perhaps that's the reason. Mostly I read fantasy, science fiction, mysteries (not cozy ones) and occasionally historical fiction. Very few recipes in those genres, if any.

I have actually cooked from a recipe in a fantasy book. Kingdom of Copper has a pivotal feast scene, and the author helpfully included the relevant (medieval Persian?) recipes in the back. I made the easiest one ("tamarind juice"), and enjoyed it quite a bit.

Heh, I'll keep my eyes open when I get to this series. I've purchased it, but it's still unread. I'm not likely to cook those dishes, though, as I hate cooking.

It might be an easy recipe but I find that word really hard to say - that final "d" is difficult to enunciate - the Hindi "imli" (rhymes w/ Tolkien's dwarf) is so MUCH easier to say
