600 better than 900

When I bought my 600 I was considering the 900 but it was
1) Too thick
2) Too heavy
3) The worst form factor I’ve ever seen… (this one alone kills the deal)

I think the 505/600 size is just perfect…
It feels very comfortable on my hands, I love taking it wherever I go, it feels like carrying a real book but potentially holding the content of 4000 of them or more!! I do not think I’d carry the bigger 900 or an Ipad everywhere I go as I do with my 600…

When I just got the e-reader I had a hard time deciding which cover I’d should use…
The Sony genuine is very appealing and it really makes me feel like opening a book, the down side; it’s not very protective.
The “Case Logic” is no so appealing, it doesn’t let me plug the usb/power connector w/o removing the unit from the case (not an easy task) but in the other hand it is very protective…
Then I decided using both after trimming the left side of the “Case Logic”

I hope the future will bring Sony readers with the 600 form but also with:
• Bigger screen (no much more) the unit should not be bigger than a 600
• Higher resolution
• Better software… I’m tired of cropping all my files because of the Sony reader is always “adding” half inch on every side reducing the viewable font size. Off course the only magnification usable is x=1; bigger fonts + reflow is always a bad idea….

I respectfully disagree with these conclusions. I've owned the 505, 300, 600, and 900 at one time or another. I find the advancements of the 900 to make it a much better reader than the 600. The screen on the 900 is easier on the eyes than the one on the 600. Since neither the 600 or 900 are pocket size, the extra wide screen on the 900 makes reading PDFs easier.

The Sony takes a lot flak over the cost of the 900, but it comes with an AC charger, a nice built in cover, removable battery, a case logic case, and a 3G radio. That is a good bargain for $100 more than the cost of the 600.

If I was to venture an educated guess, I would say that the 600 will be the first of the current Sony readers to be retired.

Whether or no the 600 is pocket-sized depends on the size of one's pockets --- the 600 fits in most of my pockets, and I'm always able to arrange my wardrobe so as to accommodate it.

I might’ve not made myself clear…
I’m not really defending “the” 600 here; I love the e-reader “class” the 600 represents…

The 900 just does not feel right on my hands… it looks like a burnt baguette…
I do not care about “pocket” size, but I do about a size that “invites” to carry the thing around…
Good portability here means a everything, if not I can always read better on my notebook.

Who cares about the ability of WIFI or 3G on the e-reader if I already have those (heavily battery demanding) features on my PC?
just for being able to buy a book from my e-reader?? Well that’s something that Sony might want but not me, and you say I have to pay premium for something that Sony wants but not me?? well…
Better reading experience with the 900? Well I rather try with a bigger screen or better resolution w/o changing the 600 size

I do not care about the 600 being discontinued as long it has a better replacement on its class…

I'm totally satisfied with my 600. I would have loved to get my hands on a 900 though, just to try out the screen.
The only thing I still wonder is the format of the 900s display. I think bigger ist better here, but why did they go with that rather unusual format. I'd like to see a bigger display 8"+ in a similar case like the 600 having the same ratio instead of the stretched 900.

Well, before I bought my 600 I've spent (literally) hours at the Sony Store with my own memory card testing both 600 & 900.
Bigger is not always better… the 900 form factor is really awkward…
for being wider in landscape mode every page is spitted in three parts not in 2; I do not like it
Landscape dual page reading? The 900 It’s too wide for single page but too narrow for double page; I do not like it.
It has a bigger screen but it is also “thicker”.. I do not like it..

I guess I was expecting an answer like yours, patpat. Concerning the 900s screen size, I think Sony thought of newspaper columns. Other than that, I cannot really see a reason to have that awkward format.

PDF's may fit a little better in portrait mode.

Well, I don't really like the portrait mode. I tried a couple of times, but zooming and panning works better than jumping half page down/up. At least for me

I'm a 900 owner. One reason I bought it was for the better PDF support. What I found is that it's still not enough of a solution - too much scrolling involved in landscape mode, and portrait mode text is usually (but not always) too small. I thought I could read technical papers on it with equations, but I think there's no substitute for a bigger screen.

All that being said - I do like the 900, and the 3-G (which I didn't think I'd use) is nice to get the paper. Thus I would still stick with the 900.

I just purchased the 900 after reviewing all the Sony E Readers, Kindle and Nook. The Daily Reader offered me what was important to me. A larger screen, touch screen, and the ability to obtain information from the library. The good news for new users is Sony just dropped the Sony Daily Reader by $50 and now it is $349
