Frequent News Download when calibre is not running

Hi,

is there any possibility to make Calibre frequently download a newsfeed even if the main program is not running at that moment?

Not without some tinkering. If Calibre isn't running, you need to rely on your OS's job scheduler to call the download. There are multiple threads explaining how to do this, the command you need is

ebook-convert recipename.recipe outputfile

(Don't forget the extension of the output file, it tells Calibre the format.) Then you could use calibredb to add the resulting file to the database, if you wish to.

if you add this to the db would it also email it to the kindle address you have set up if it is configured to automatically email new news? would you be able to write a sample script for this for others just to plug in their recipes and output files?

I'm not sure if it would email automatically- what I do know is that it requires Calibre to be running, of course. You probably would have to add the news- tag according to your language settings, as well.
I can't provide a sample script, as I have never used the commands myself, but I think there are some scripts floating around in the forum. Try the search. If you want to build it yourself, the relevant commands are ebook-convert, calibredb and calibre-smtp. The manual should have all the information you need.
