Pacific NW of U.S. faces same earthquake possibilities as Japan
Pacific Northwest Faces Nearly Identical Risks to Japanese Quake
ScienceDaily (Mar. 11, 2011) — It's being called one of the largest recorded earthquakes in world history. Also, according to Robert Yeats, "This is our wake up call." Japan today is struggling with the aftermath of a massive 8.9 earthquake on a subduction zone, a short distance offshore, which unleashed a devastating tsunami that killed hundreds and has turned large parts of cities into rubble. Yeats, a professor emeritus of geology at Oregon State University, said that if people didn't already get the message from recent disasters in Sumatra and Chile, they should pay attention now. "This is an earthquake of the same type, with about the same magnitude and proximity that we face here in the Pacific Northwest from the Cascadia Subduction Zone," Yeats said. "What you are seeing in Japan today is what you will also see in our future. Except they are better prepared than we are." ... http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases...0311165726.htm . we have been under a "when" not "if" mentality as long as I have lived here. just prior to buying this place I had had a project wiring the FEMA center, and paid extremely close attention to all of the maps detailing the lehars from the volcanoes, tsunami paths, and known existing fault lines. I'm in just about as good a place as possible as one can be in western Washington. given that, though, one cannot become a total hermit, and it is necessary to leave the safety cocoon occasionally

This made me think of the book The Orphan Tsunami of 1700-- my copy is a slightly less than legitimate digital copy, so I checked to see if there is a legit ebook version, and found that it is a free Google book as a downloadable PDF:

Most of Oregon and Washington are amazingly unprepared for the big one. In the Portland area we are sitting on numerous minor faults and a major one just off the coast. The Willamette river at the Portland waterfront is at 27 feet and is 50+ miles inland.
So yes. When (not if) it happens, it's going to be a mess. |
