Private Content with shared Account/Kindels
I think I screwed up.
I have been slowly introducing Kindles to the women in my life. First my wife, then we bought one for her mother and recently one for my Mom. My daughter has recently co-opped her mothers kindle all tied to my account. My mother and mother-in-law are retired with fixed-incomes so this lets me buy books that they can read so they don't struggle with the food vs latest Evanovitch/Reichs/Patterson novel. But since they can all sync and see my collection I now have to be careful of what I buy. If I wanted to try "Desires Sirocco" or "Fifty Shades of Grey" - they would all see it when they went to sync/look for new books in my collection. This could lead to odd-looks. Is there any way to separate the content on Amazon so only my kindle can see it? I thought about the order the book, sync to my kindle then delete the book from Amazon all within two minutes. But that feels ... sleazy. I'm not too ashamed of the "Gor" novels, Kushels Dart or even the "Fifty Shades" book, but it would be nice to be able to mark some stuff 'Private'. Anyone have a suggestion? True story: I tried an audio-book of "Nice Girls don't have Fangs" for my commute. (Dont judge me - too many serial-killer stories in a row makes me paranoid). My daughter has started an internship at a hospital near to work so she commutes with me. I had to sit there while the book talked about near-sex experiences including discussion of the "..the strawberry shaped wet patch on my panties". It was awkward. At the moment I have no privacy with my Kindle books or audio-books. |

The books you buy are not automatically downloaded to every kindle. Not even when they sync. The only way they could see those books is if they use the archive function on their kindles, or have access to your amazon account on the computer.
Also, you could open a new account and deregister your Kindle, and register it to the new account. Then you would have access to both accounts but any future books you bought for yourself would only be in the 2nd archive. |

I noticed that recently when I buy - the Amazon page only lets me pick 1 kindle to 'deliver' to. So I taught everyone how to use the archive feature and ordered them by "Most Recent First" so they could spot new purchases that were not sent to their kindles.
I thought about a second Amazon account - but it's just not worth it for the occasional book. I do have a Sony PRS-505 I could use with Fictionwise/Smashwords/Calibre if I really wanted to keep things separate. Darn Amazon - make it too easy/nice to use. |

a) I don't think anybody really cares what anyone else reads
b) What makes you think that none of them are interested in those novels? |

It's bad enough my mother and sister both jaws dropped when they picked up a Lori Foster book for me and decided to skim through it. It's also a good thing I don't have company ever rarely because the first thing you see when you walk into a living room is hundreds of romances stack on shelves. My suggestion is if really bothers you. Get a second account and use it to buy from. Have the books sent to Kindle for PC then remove the drm of the books and sideload them then no one but you would see them then. The Audibles is more tricky to hide. "Lori Foster" eh? I'll have to remember that author.
Audiobooks are the only way I survive my commute so I have to have something to distract me from the idiot who is on his cell phone, in the left lane and people are screaming around on the left side... But my Mom! At next Thanksgiving I'd have to re-do the scene from "Coupling" trying to justify the merits of "Lesbian Spank Inferno" (one of the greatest scenes ever by the way). No - I'll just stick to Murder and Mayham on the Kindles. A joke: Scene in a movie with a topless woman lying on a bed. A man walks in, grabs a pillow and smothers her. Movie is rated PG13. Same scene but man kisses women tenderly - movie is rated R. You laugh until you realize that violence is a lot more acceptable to our society than sexuality. (sigh) Thanks for all the replies. |

I read and listen to Romance of all kinds, Urban Fantasy, Cozy Mystery and some Erotic Romance. As for 50 Shades audiobooks. Don't waste your credits on them. They took the original recording which was really good and brought the pitch on her voice down to sound like a guy's. They call it remastered. It's freaky! The neat thing about using my Sansa Zip Clip instead of the Kindle is I can checkout library audiobooks for free that are in WMA format and save a ton of money. |

I figure that my parents realize that at the age of 40, or 37 when I got my Mom a DX and put her on my account, that I can read what I want. I have no idea if she has ever looked at some of my erotica or not. More power to her if she has, I am trying to envision my 70 year old mother reading bondage and finding it hard. Then again, she had four kids so I think I can safely assume that she is not a total prude...
My child, well that is something a bit different. I am going to have to think about that in about 7-8 years. As it is, I have already turned off the cover view on my IPad because I don't want people looking at the covers if they decide to browse what I have in my Kindle folder on the IPad. Titles are not always obvious, the covers make it pretty darn obvious. |

I recently got a KF for my daugher. Had the same issues. Finally, deregistered it from my account and registered it to her account (I know her password). Then gave her a gift card to make up for not being able to see the books on my account. But I would be embarassed to have my MIL see 50 shades or Lori Foster. And I certainly don't want Sydney to see them!
If you use Calibre and some plug ins, you can simply download the books to your computer, and send them to any kindle. I only feel comfortable sending them to my kindle, but that is up to you. |

heheh My MIL told me she was reading 50 Shades of Grey. We are both grown ups, I don't care and think it is kind of cool actually.

I tell them that I download tons of freebies and don't always take time to check descriptions. It works where the books are more obscure, with ambiguous titles.
I'm kinda stuck not buying the ones that scream... what an atypically naughty girl I am. If a book is lendable, I'll borrow for a half/day and hope they don't look in the archives before i disappear it. So, yes, I too wish there were a way to create collections in the archives (that alone would be awesome) and make certain ones private. |

Or, buy your sleezy stuff from feedbooks and good reads. The have a much better selection of tasty sleeze. Calibre and the notorious plugins is the best solution for keeping track of your books. |

Download the ebook to your computer, sideload the ebook on your Kindle using the USB cable, delete it from your Manage My Kindle page. Problem solved. Unless they are really nosy and check out the Digital Orders for your account.
