I came across a few of Masterton's short stories back in the nineties, so I've just been having a look at the UK prices - pretty much the same for Feelings of Fear (£1.89)

There also appears to be a third volume - Fortnight of Fear

That one has a story title in it I recognise - Pig's Dinner. I remember that from an anthology called The Mammoth Book of Terror, and it's one of the nastiest pieces of short fiction I've ever come across!

That's "horrific nasty" as opposed to "badly written nasty". Or at least it was back then.

It's possible to find the story The Birds itself for free online. If you like Horror and haven't read it, I highly recommend doing so, even if you already saw the movie! The story is far more intense.

I bought The Birds while it was on sale.

After I finish the western I'm reading now, I plan on rereading Clive Barker's The Damnation Game. But after that, I think I'll read The Birds.

I finished The Birds. Overall, I liked it. Daphne Du Maurier is a very good writer. My favorite stories were The Birds, The Apple Tree and Kiss Me Again, Stranger. They aren't really horror stories. Some of them aren't even traditional suspense stories. They are typically stories where something is slightly off.

Also, be aware that these aren't really short stores. Four of the stories clock in at about a hundred pages each.

The one thing I didn't like about her stories was likely a sign of the times they were written in. It was that British upper crust superiority. Referring to locals and servants as ignorant peasants with dumb looks on their faces. That was really only a problem on Monte Verita (which took me forever to read, because I didn't care for the protagonists) and The Little Photographer (which I liked in spite of it).

At any rate, I'd recommend the book and would read more from her.
